^You dont have to worry about smog if you get a catback...but if you got a high flow cat or a test pipe then you wont pass visual but could possibly pass the sniffer. The only thing you have to worry about with the catback is the noise...in certain cities they are assholes about and in other cities they dont care as much. CA law requires your exhaust to be no louder than 95db.

You can literally run your car with nothing past the cat for smog purposes...Noise is the only issue...

Some catbacks actually generate trace amounts of sodium azide, a very hazardous waste product. If sniffers catch that then you'll see a hefty fine, maybe even jail time.
Some even get sent off to Siberia in forced labor. |

So here is the deal. . .
I called CHP in San Francisco and their officer told me that, a Cali Legal Exhaust system will come with a certificate saying it is legal. If it doesn't the exhaust can't change the amount of factory emissions and CAN NOT be louder than the STOCK exhaust. |

Also, CHP will tell you what is 100% legal and nothing but what is 100% legal. Basically... if you have an aftermarket exhaust and you get pulled over, the cop will issue you a fix it ticket or stat-ref ticket no matter how much you bitch and moan that it's legal. He won't care. If you do get a ticket, you'll just have to go to court or state-ref and show the papers saying that it is legal and then get the ticket signed off. Smog wise, it depends on the smog tech. If you get a strict one, he'll check for a cat and then to his own opinion choose whether or not your car even has a chance to pass. But he'll most likely stick the sniffer in it just for the hell of it to see how it does. If you get a cool one (shhhh)... they won't even mind you missing your cat or having a catback. They'll just let you pay for the smog and then if you fail you fail or maybe have you pass o_O. There's really no "theory" in any of this. If you run an aftermarket exhaust you just raise the risk of getting yourself pulled over. This is why I ran a cutout. Being in Fremont, there's one officer that is basically determined in life to take down street racers and all modified cars so me having an exhaust in my area is a pretty big no-no for me =/. Well that's like 40% of the reason... the 60% of it is the drone and being able to sound stock when I want to. But I have nothing against aftermarket exhausts... so no one go seeing this as a flame on exhaust cause it's not. Last edited by mad monkey; 03-01-2008 at 03:34 AM. |
