What's special about i-Vtec ? what's "VTEC" ?

Hey,

so i got my civic couple months ago...and i feel like a noob now x]

whats special about the i-Vtec engines -details- ?! just economic ? or does it have anything to do with the speedy/sporty drive ect, ??

what does VTEC mean ?! most Si owners keep talking about it , and i got no damn idea ... is it just in the Si ?!

google is a wonderful thing...VTEC is Valve TEChnology, and is Hondas version of variable valve timing. To keep it simple, a cam shaft will rotate, and the lobes on the cam shaft will lift the intake and/or exhaust valve as needed.

With most cars, you'll only have one cam to operate both intake and exhaust valves or possibly two (ie. DOHC) i-vtec simply uses a second set of cam lobes for high speed operation. This allows for smooth, efficient operation at low load/rpm while engaging, when necessary, the second set for higher load/rpm operation

just to clarify, vtec is a physical set of components in your car's engine, not just some cool sound your car makes when you get to a certain rpm. And no, not only the SI has it. The R18, or Civic EX, fit, etc do not have i-vtec. This only means that they have variable valve timing for the intake, only.

^^^ sorry but nope.

Visual representation of VTEC
As you can see when vtec engages the larger cam lobe allows opens the valves wider allowing more intake/exhaust gases to get in/out

rep to all for answering a noob questions w/o the smart a$$ remarks I've seen of late.

To the OP: Where do you live? Are there Type-R's or Si's in your area for you to experience it?

I started getting into cars around three years ago, and I ran into four types of people: 1. tool bags who didn't know what they were talking about who treated me like an idiot for asking questions;
2. tool bags who DID know what they were talking about who treated me like an idiot for asking questions;
3. super intelligent guys who would give me the answers; and
4. super intelligent guys who would explain to me the basics, and then tell me to go off and figure out the rest on my own.

It's a pain in the ass figuring things out, and it takes more balls to show some humility and ask a "dumb" question than to settle on an assumption or listen to idiots who don't know what they're talking about...

When you see a car with "VTEC" on the side of it. That means the car has at least 500hp. So you better be careful.

VTEC = Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control.
i-VTEC = Intelligent Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control.

VTEC works on the basis where a camshaft has two cam lobes, with it switching over to the high lift and duration lobe at a certain point in the rev range.

i-VTEC is the same as VTEC except the intake cam's timing can be adjusted.

All current Honda production motors have VTEC, although not all as pronounced as the DOHC motors.

You dont know what your talking about. All new Hondas have i-VTEC. The "i" in i-VTEC stands for intelligent.
