I'm thinking that's just too much work. Once the stock airbox is out, there's a boatload of space to locate the battery there and you'll only need to extend the terminals a max of 2ft or so. With wiring, shorter is always better.

This will leave a boat load of room for clean fresh air and ducting, your totally right.....

My only concern is that area easily gets blocked up by snow, so a secondary intake source will be necessary. I was going to use the stock intake pipe and fit a lightly weighted flap that would automatically shut off when the primary port started flowing air.

Regardless of the rake of the windshield, there still is a high pressure area at the base of the windshield. That is why manufacturers use that area for fresh air ventilation. My thought is that accessing that area would serve a double duty of providing fresh air to the car and to draw in colder, denser air to the filter housing.

You make a great point. When the snowfall is heavy, you might note that your ventilation doesn't work so good until that snow is cleared away. However, once the snow is cleared, you should be fine. You could also just disconnect the sealed airbox from the firewall duct and run it that way during the winter. There were a number of muscle cars that had flaps that could close during severe rain or snow. If we kept the factory cold air inlet, we could still get fresh air coming in.

I don't think relocating all the parts under the hood wouldn't be very cost effective. Or would it be advantageous. Like Turbotezza said once the stock airbox is out there is plenty of room to do whatever you want. All you would really want to do if anything is just go with one of those small batteries to give you some extra room.

But I think we should go with something like that gruppe-m intake. Bring the air in at the base of the windshield, like NitrousG35 was saying. We just need to find the best method for doing it. How can we make an intake path without making it look ghetto fabulous? That is the question.

Mike, I wonder if a guy could go to a wrecking/recycling yard and try and find a factory air box that would accomodate an Apexi cone filter, while fitting inside the limited space that there is?

I have seen something on the Sti that might be adapted to our cars if I could get the dimensions.

A good guess is that most Sti's have had the intakes replaced prior to a crash. Go onto a Subie forum. I'm sure someone has one collecting dust in their garage

That's a pretty good idea. So you want to incorporate thier airbox cover to fit over our MAF housing and filter?

What about the older ford pickup airboxes that are round and have those giant conical paper filters in them that have that clamp strap that holds it together in the center. could we adapt that to go around the Apexi filter and put a sealed flex hose on the end and seal the filter end around the MAF housing. That way the filter elemnt is comletely sealed and will pressureize when air is forced in.

Found this while searching for cold air induction boxes:

And this: Has a carbon fiber heat shield that surrounds the filter and the size is compact.

That viper filter looks promising but I would like to stick with the Apexi since it cost me close to a $100. And I'm still waiting for it to be delivered on Monday. I'm stuck with my HKS POS. lol.

I've never seen the GSR intake box. Is it big enough to house the Apexi filter? I know the Ford truck ones will fit. But I don't know how I would seal te MAF housing end. I would have to see one again to see if it's possible. I mean I could do it but would it fit under our hoods. So do you think that would work?

Peter, they have them in many sizes. I found some for earlier Civics, so I am sure one would fit in our engine compartment.

No the Apex will not fit. I think I used a K&N RE-0930 and a piece of 3 inch aluminum tubuing to adapt to the stock intake hosing.

nitrous, you could be on to something here. That would probably have to be chopped up a little in some spots. But it would most likely house an Apexi filter with our MAF housing on it. Now we would have to find out which one for which car would fit ours with the least amount of hacking. And without actually seeing the actual box, that would be hard.

But I still think our best bet would be the Ford style air boxes. I know for a fact an Apexi filter will fit inside one. But I don't know if I could adapt our MAF housing also.

I am trying to locate a picture of the induction box on the GSR. This might be just the ticket. What we need is a housing that will accept a larger filter and then connect it to the firewall via brake/cold air tubing.

Found a pic of a 1998 GSR:
