I ordered some bits and pieces to get the ball rolling. Some parts new and others from bone yards to let me cut and fab up things without throwing $$ away

I wish I was home I cant do shit from here. Geta large piece of styrofoam and shape it to fit in the area we have available. Then make sure that there is enough volume (should be fairly simple mathmatics here) for the filter and airspace. Use cheap crap that you can easily manipulate to start, I mean you can get foam at hoam depot and cut it with a cheese cutter for crap sake.

What if there is a curved area in the box? How do you calculate the volume of a sphear?

What did you get? Nice getting the ball rolling. I went to Autozone and they have the intake ducting, but there's no 'scoop' and he said he didn't know what I was talking about.

This is what I'm looking for. If anyone can tell me where I can buy something like this with a 3" round inlet on the side that connects the tube to the intake itself, I'd appreciate it.

random comment but couldnt you just do a hood tilt thing were you get longer bolts for the hood and put washers in there so theres a space where the hood meets the windshield like this. you could leave it like that or you could fabricate something to block all sides of it except for where you have your intake so all the air gets sucked into the intake. ill see i i can draw a diagram because that sounds confusing

I think Corsport sells something like this. This tread is awesome. I read a lot about cowl induction for the past couple of days. I wanna build airbox too but i dont know either connect it to fog light opening or through firewall. I need to remove cowl to find water free space if there is any. Also, i found some interesting picture.. i think it was from miata site.

It looks compact taking into account that we dont have much space there. I dont know how well that filters performs..but just an idea. Hope we all come up with something nice at the end.

Nice drawing man.... It looks even easier. Do you think there is any chance of water getting through that hole?

One thing I'm not understanding, is why would you tilt the hood? Why not do something with the black plastic shroud? It would look alot better. I know we're looking for performance, but at what cost? I wouldn't want my car looking like that it's been in a wreck or something.

well this is a solution that doesnt involve cutting or modifying the vehicle because personally i dont like the idea of hacking into the wiper shroud thing. for this all youd need to do is get longer bolts and put some rubber washers in between so its lifted up which is completely reversible. then you would need to make something out of plastic or metal that blocks off all the cracks made by tilting the hood except for where you have your homemade intake thing.

Holy smokes, where did you find that picture. Man, I love you to say the least. mike_si for President! This is exactly what I have been trying to tell people. I couldn't have explained it any better myself. Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. There really doesn't need to be anymore said. Now we need to go about finding the materials to construct such a configuration.

Finally, I feel vindicated. Some people here have suggested I give up on my idea. Now that I have an actual picture to go by, others can begin to get a grasp of what I have been talking about all along. Totally fantastic dude!

I'd rep you with so many 8 balls, your head would be spinning if I could!

Besides looking kind of tacky IMHO, it would be better to draw air in, not from a raised hood, which would be impossible to connect a duct to, but rather cutting a hole in the cowl instead. Thanks for trying to help though. It is brainstorming like this that gets the ball rolling.

I took it fom here
MX-5 Miata Forum - DIY cowl intake again
I saw many different things done for cowl induction but this one seem to be simple and effective. I have X intake, so i was thinking about building something like that orange cone around it. I would assume it could be done. We just need to find some flexiable plastic or something.

I wish I could send you a 6 pack or your favorite pizza. The best I can do is an e-hug. Really, I cannot thank you enough for finding and posting that picture. Now I don't have to have people visualizing what I mean. They can actually see what I have been trying to talk about all along.

I am waiting to try and get me an X-factor intake, whether new or used. After that, I will begin construction of an enshrouded or enclosed airbox for the Apexi filter and put a duct into the firewall area below the cowl. A little flexible tubing and we should be good to go.

Hey man ... e-hug works for me .. hahah . We are all here for the same reason, try to improve our cars. I was thinking to build airbox too. I was just thinking, what would be better : airbox or that cone around filter???? Which one will give better airflow ??? If cone is better, then we need to find some flexible plastic or something to build it with.

yeah it does look a bit goofy, i definably wouldnt do it to my car. ive read some stuff saying you can decrease your engine temp by half just by by doing the hood tilt thing.

Hood Tilt - D-series.org

your idea sounds really good though, i cant wait to see how it works.
