TWM SS vs. Comptech SS vs. All other SS

This is for informational purposes only and not to say which is better etc. This is not intended for any arguing on which is better in any aspect.

Both CompTech and TWM Short Shifters work great and many have been more than pleased with their performance and craftsmanship/quality. Which you choose would basically be price. If you can still find a CompTech short shifter, go for it. It's 100% proven AND is no longer being made. I have one As for CorSport and Neuspeed, I haven't heard much about their products. For CorSport, maybe a small handful of people have their SS, but it seems to be similar to CompTech and TWM as of now. Their information on their website does not say how much it shortens throw, but CompTech and TWM websites do. For Neuspeed, I have heard of one person with theirs. Although it says it shortens throw approximately 25%, I'll assume it shortens throw 22% as CompTech and TWM, since they are all made basically the same, until someone proves that wrong.
B&M is a popular brand, however I have yet to hear of anyone with this Short Shift lever with any 2006+ Honda Civic. If you have it, let us know! It's $199, so it's a hard thing to just go on a limb and buy it to test it. So again, let us know if you have a B&M SS.

Pictures

Summary
  • If you want a full lever change, go B&M.
  • If you are looking for best price for JUST the SS, go CompTech.
  • If you intend to purchase cable and base bushings now or in the future, go TWM since they will have the best package price.
  • If you want an SS and cable bushings, go CorSport. Their package is the best price.
  • If you like Neuspeed, go Neuspeed.

they are all pretty much the same i have the Twm. i bought it because i wanted to get the bushings package and a weighted shift knob. Plus they had a lot of great deals and sales at the time. the quality is very good on the twm but they are all the same.

They all feature the same shortening, and generally the same in design. Get whatever's cheapest, but I went with TWM because I've loved their service thus far. They're very prompt and answer questions well. Whenever I've had a problem, they've been there to help.

I've got Comptech, love it...but I think they're all pretty much the same, can't really do that much to make one have any advantage over another IMO.

all are pretty much the same, but comptech is 100% proven. they all shorten the throws by like 22%, thats the most possible.

Thanks for all of your information. I'll be updating the first post with info, possibly get it stickied for other users who have the same or a similar question.

I just bought a Comptech SS brand new for $70 shipped, should be here in a few days.

It doesn't matter because they're all just adapters. Until there is a full replacement like the Mugen shortshifter then we're all just getting by. D@m it I want that Mugen shortshifter!!!

Other than cutting the stick and getting a counter sunk knob, what can I do to lower the knob height? I have a CTR FD2 knob now, and CompTech SS on the way. Anything else I can do? I love that LOW LOW look and feel. [like a 350Z] ---> http://z.about.com/d/cars/1/0/R/n/07...z_interior.jpg

You will need a die to recut the threads so the CTR knob will screw on like OEM. IIRC the thread pitch is 12x1.5

I say test it out first before cutting the shaft - with my SS, and cable bushings, skunk2 knob (all the way down), I have only about 4" throw max.

If you do cut the shaft - measure twice cut once - suggest trying it slowly - once you cut it can't be added back unless you get a new shaft

As for me - its just right YMMV.

Well, how hard is it to do and is it worth it? I don't have a die to do it, I would have to find someone who did. and IIRC is If I Recall? And I though the thread pitch is 10x1.5....

How bad do you want the lower stick for your CTR knob? IIIRC = If I Recall or Remember Correctly

You're right about the thread pitch is 10x1.5. I got confised on the thread pitch for lugs.

Well I'll let you know after I put in the SS. But thinking about it now, look at the Si shaft(stick) it goes from the 10x1.5 threading and gradually gets larger at a certain point. I wouldn't be able to do that, would I?

Well, I don't have an Si -just a MT EX. However, I would think that trying to add threads to the stock shaft (at least on my EX) would be very tough for that very reason. Not to mention, I'd bet that the shaft is hardened after thread cutting - so even if you dared it would take a long time to cut.

In theory, with an after market shift knob (like a Skunk2 one) - you could still cut the shaft a little (1/4 to 1/2" or so) and not have to re-thread as that knob will spin over the non threaded part of the shaft a good bit. Again, I wouldn't suggest this unless you want extremely short shifts - talking 2-3" throws. At that point you would have to be very precise on shifting or you'll miss shift very easily.

Think about it - I'd hate to see anyone blow an engine with a missed down shift from say 5th to 2nd at 60+ MPH - that would zap you straight into redline - ouch

I'd say stay with the stock shaft, after market knob (spun all the way down), and the SS kit. Try that for a few weeks. I've had mine in for a week or so now, and I'm just getting comfortable with it. Shorter, in my opinion, would be too risky and cause me to miss shifts rather than have a good fast shift.

-W

PS: if you do this I will not be held responsible as warnings / concerns are given in advance . . .
