(R18) Oil capacity

Here in the past few day's I've been getting paranoid with how much oil I've been putting into my R18.

I always fill up the oil filter completely and then empty out up to 4 quarts of oil into the car.

I think that is the recommended amount, but checking the oil level with our dipsticks is impossible.

Is 4 quarts too much? I didn't know over filling was bad... Or is a little overfill that bad?

Manual says 3.9 Quarts, including the filter. I think you're saying you put 4 quarts + enough to fill the oil filter (do you pre-load it or something?) - might be too much. I haven't changed my oil yet, though, so...

A "little" over is not horrible. But on a system which holds less than five quarts a little really is a little. Even a half a quart is over 10% too much.

I think the Owners manual says total system capacity is 4.7 quarts. But refill capacity is closer to 4 quarts (Edit: 3.9 quarts. Thanks GreenHokie). I agree it is very hard to see new oil on the dipstick. It is easier to see in the checkered area, so I recommend putting less than the full amount in and then adding little by little (checking as you go) untill it is at the top of this area. If you go over it is very hard to tell how far over.

Edit: Very much over can be bad. The crankshaft will be spinning through more oil than it should be. This can cause oil foaming and other problems.

Well I've always filled a full 4 quarts counting the filter pre-loaded too.

If that .1 quart is actually enough for concern I might just start leaving a tad bit left over next time.

Thanks for the responses guys.

The amount listed in the manual is an estimate. It is usually pretty close, but how much oil you get out can vary depending on oil temp, if the car is level or not, etc. I would recommend you put about a half quart less in and then check and see if you can tell where the oil comes on the crosshatch/checkered section of the dipstick.

However, I doubt you are hurting anything just putting 4 quarts in.
