P2R TB Spacer - How Does it Work?

This might be a dumb question, but how does the P2R TB spacer add power? Why does adding a 3/4" space in between the intake and TB add power and increase gas mileage? Just curious, I like to know how things work. I've been doing research on this site and this seems to be the best first mod for my 07 Si.

Plenum may refer to:

* the antithesis of a vacuum; in other words, completely-filled, positive-pressure space.
