Well now I'm at
Scangauge 2, car 0 I hooked it up to my gf's Mazda 3 to find a code. She too has a EGR valve issue. What's the deal man? haha. Finding the port in the Maz3 was funny. I spent 10 min looking under the steering wheel and even the passenger side and under the hood. Finally it turns out the port is sitting in the roof of one of those cubbies to the left of the steering wheel. |

Maintenance Light
The maintenance light has been popping on in my wife's Civic. I was thinking about getting the ScanGuage II mainly for mpg data. I know that the SGII also reads engine codes. I know how to change the oil and check the fluids, but I don't know how to do anything mechanical.
If I bought a ScanGuage (or other code reader) how would deciphering the engine codes help me when I'd just have to take it to the shop anyway? Thanks |

saveyou $75+ for the shop to tell u what the SGII can..the way i see it...in clearing two codes the SGII would in a way have paid for itself
and when you take it to the shop you will have a better idea of what needs to be replaced instead of just taking their word for it when they tell you that it will cost $1,000 for nothing |

when my wife's car threw a code i wrote it down and looked it up on the internet...
my uncle owns a mechanic shop and i told him the code number and what i found on the internet and when he scanned it he confirmed exactly what i found on the internet... if you have a shop that you trust then i'm sure they will...some places will cut you a break it you have the problem fixed after having it scanned... if you scan it yourself and you look it up and see it's nothing major...like a bad o2 sensor(which won't kill the car, it just won't be perfect) then you can clear it if you want...or just leave it on...it gives me piece of mind knowing what is wrong...i'm not worried about clearing as much as knowing what it is |

you take the code and look it up on Troublcodes.net Trouble Codes OBD & OBD2 Trouble Codes and Technical info & Tool Store. By BAT Auto Technical
then you just book an appt with the dealer and say what's wrong if its under warrenty then there's no issue really, but if its out of warrenty than they'll just order the parts and do the replacement for you (yes you'd pay for that) but you'd save the $75-100 the dealer charges for reading the code with their scan tool. |

So, after owning the Scangauge II forever now, I just started using the MPG function. Can somebody explain how you get an acurate reading from it? You guys who have been using this gauge know what I'm talking about: it'll read 99999, then 26.7, then something else.
I literally JUST now started using this gauge (after setting the fillup), and filling up my tank. So will it give me an acurate reading at the tail end of my tank, or will it just keep flipping different numbers while I'm driving? |

If you are looking at the instantaneous MPG, then yes, it will read what you are doing right now. 99999 is what it shows with fuel cut.
If you want to look at average MPG, you need to go to "TRIP" and look at Tank, Current, or Today. If you have the newer firmware, you can program the gages so that BOTH instantaneous and average are displayed at the same time. -mr. bill |

The ScanGauge will be just as accurate (or inaccurate if you're calibration is off) when your tank is full as when its empty since it uses fuel injector pulse width to determine how much fuel is being burned which isn't affected at all by the amount of fuel in the tank. |

What you need is to use the XGauge function (assuming that your SGII firmware already has it) to call up the Current Trip's MPG as well as the Tank MPG and have it shown as a gauge. The Current Trip MPG will show you your average MPG for the current trip. While the Tank MPG will show you how much fuel economy you're getting from your current tank of gas. Also, calibration is important. Make sure you do it right as some calculations like cost per mile, distance to empty and time to empty (among other things), are dependent on it. |
