Install exhaust without lift?
Searched everywhere, but I can't find an answer... Is it possible to install a new cat and catback exhaust on my Si with only a pair of jackstands?
If I need a lift, then how do I go about finding one to use? It seems like almost everybody on this forum has a lift they can use... I haven't asked, but I bet my local shops in Orlando, FL (even the one I've spent thousands at) are going tell me I can't use their lifts because of liability reasons... |

It is possible to do exhaust+cat with just a couple jackstands. Hoist just makes it easier.
Check your yellow pages, see if there's a do-it-yourself kinda place that rents bays. We have one here in Calgary that will rent you a bay loaded with tools and a hoist for $20 an hour.

it's possible, but would be easier to do with a lift becasue you have more room to move your arms and torque down bolts with.I have crawled under my car to install my axle back and have done the same when bolting by header back up to the rest of the exhaust when I(stupidly) ran an open header at the track.

If you know someone with a sloping driveway, you can park the car in a way so that when you jack it up, you get some extra clearance due to the elevation change. Just make sure that both wheels are chalked at the bottom and your jackstands are very secure. It worked wonders for me and my friend when we did my old wrx's exhaust. On and off in 45 minutes flat. Then again, we also had some air tools which made a difference...

It is easy with jackstands as well. We done turbo kit install, full engine rebuilts, and even clutch replacements with only 4 jack stands, and a quality hydraulic jack.
If you want to perform work on an incline, please use wheel chock. Keep safety in mind whenever crawling under a car. We always use the removed wheel and place under the frame just in case something should fail. |
