truth about I/H/E hp & torque gains??????

a buddy of mine just bought a new scion TC and has installed a intake with the help of a friend. Anyway the friend who helped him install the intake (who by, the way, has I/H/E already installed in his car) told my homie that I/H/E my state gains of 10hp or so per part, BUT THAT ONLY LASTS FOR 5 OR 10 MINUTES then after that you actually only get 1 or 2 hp gain. Now all the magazines and so forth that I've read never stated this.......IS THIS TRUE???? AND IF SO IS I/H/E A WASTE OF CASH..........REALLY WANT TO FIGURE THIS OUT B-4 I DIVE INTO I/H/E. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME SOLVE THIS MYSTERY.

How could power gains, gained by increasing the the efficiency at wich your engine consumes and eliminates air not last? Your friend is either misinformed or playing a joke on you. You engine is a glorified air pump, the more air it proccesses the more power it makes. Aftermarket or performance I/H/E are designed to allow your engine to pump air with less resistance how much power it frees up is limited by how much air the internals (the head) of the engine can flow. So no gains gaind by i/h/e will not dissaper magicaly after 5 minutes. If you want to know what you will gain tell me what do you have an Si or 1.8 liter civic? On an Si there are substantial gains with i/h/e on a base civic the gains are very small due to the lower flow capacity and smaller size of its engine.

This is probably true of a short ram intake because once the engine heats up the gains will decrease dramatically from the hot air being sucked in

He must be talking about single use intakes. I don't recommend those.

i think he's talking about the idea that your car's ecu will adjust to any modifications. I've heard that you have to do the "reset your ecu" trick to keep it from adjusting different things and making it seem as if you don't really have an intake or whatever.

So, $1000+ for 5-10 min of fun, trailing off into less power and satisfaction?

...That sounds like a deal from a Pahrump cat house...

called my friend to clear up what was said, and yes his statement was that the ecu only allows gains for 5 minutes or 1 run at the "track". after that its only 1 to 2 hp over stock. Now his mechanic buddy is somewhat experienced, he does all of his own installs(ranging from I/H/E to RICE ) and the guy(mechanic) has even won several awards(all at scion only competions ), but with all of his awards and knowledge his "I/H/E" theory seemed flaw. So I thought it better to ask you guys, since most on here either know what there talking about, or will point me in a proper direction to get the info need........BUT is there a definitive concrete answer to this question, and can someone give "official proof", like a link, so that I can show my friend(and he can pass on the info to his buddy) and they dont think I'm just talkin out my ass(butt).......thankz

I'm sure a lot of the dyno plots you find on here are of cars that have had their mods installed for more than a few minutes. Has he offered any explanation as to where these temporary HP go after a few minutes? I know I've heard of and seen gains from a piggyback ECU disappear w/ the factory ECU making adjustments but not w/ hardware.

I think beyond this "5 minute" thing (which IMHO is pure crap), the cost of the mod in relation to the increase in power, isn't worth any of it. I've moded cars before and over the years I finally learned the costs associated with the minimal gains, just aren't worth it. Gains so minimal it takes a dyno run to measure them. This is of course not referring to forced induction or nitrous, but the typical I/E mod's.
