Hey everyone. I just purchased BC stage 2 cams, Titainium valve springs and retainers!! WOOT! However, I really need to know something! Only answer if you know! Do I need to remove the head in order to install all this or can it stay on the block!????

I know to do the cams you do not have to remove the head...as far as springs and retainers IDK...I don;t have my manual with me right now, but I'll check later...

You can change the springs. With the cams out the valves should be closed. Then with the adaptor from a compression tester, hook your air compressor to that. Shouldnt need alot of pressure. The air pressure will hold the valves closed while you have the retainers and springs off. Then put the new ones on. Also for a saftey measure, make sure the cylinder you are working on, the piston is at top dead center. Then if you do knock the valve down it wont fall into the cyinder. It will just sit atop the piston and wont fall to far.

You dont have to remove the head for the cam and spring change. To do the spring change you will need a spring compressor. You will have to do one cylinder at a time. The engine must be set to Top dead center on the cylinder you are changing the valves on.this way the valves will drop down and stop on the piston.this will keep the valves in place. With the right tools and good mechanical knowledge a person can do it their-self. |

pressurizing the cylinder works if a guy can keep the engine from rolling over from the air pressure pushing the piston back down.To keep the engine from turning over the rod has to be perfectly straight up and down in the cylinder. This is sometimes hard to get right on. So you either have to lock the engine with a turning tool on the crank or in gear and the brakes applied.
SO if the piston is down and air pressure is all that is holding the valves up,if you unseat the valve trying to get the spring and retainer back on the valve will drop and fall down in the cylinder. At that point your FUBAR and the head must come off. The easiest way is to stick a long screw driver in the spark plug hole and turn the engine over until you see it come all the way up and start to go back down.then back it up at the exact up to down point and done. The pistons dome in the K20z3 comes right up in the chamber in the head very close to the valves,so the valve will only drop down a small amount.NO need to mess with pressurizing the cylinder. |

well the only spring compressor i have used is like a C clamp, it goes around the head and on side goes on the valve face and the other sits on top of the valve spring. then u clamp it down and it compresses the spring so that the retainer can be removed and boom, out comes the spring.
unless there is an easier way without taking the head off. i would love to hear it because obviously it would make installation a hell of a lot easier not having to remove the whole head. |
