Exclamation Truth on HYDROLOCK

ok I just wanted to make this thread because there are like 200 on will my car hydrolock....no unless your car in submerged to were the filter is and you are rev'n the hell out of it no. Also if you are that concerned there are things to help prevent the little amount that may make it in the intake:

1. Hydroshield every intake company I have seen has one of these it is water repellant not reesistant.

2. If you end up driving through a puddle large enough to maybe do damage
A. why are you driving through a puddle that big.
B. take your foot off the gas.

i have pesonaly drove my SI across the states and have had no trouble, I am making this because i was concerned also. But as with anything i looked into and asked question to some mechanics i knew and what not.

Ive done it before on a previous car. Its not as hard as it seems. My car shut off but not to prevent hydrolock but because i shot a rod out the bottom of the oilpan before i could ever get my hand from the wheel to the key to kill the motor. It doesnt matter if you let off the gas or not if the filter is submerged because the motor is going to be drawing in air from somewhere and your intake is the only spot for that to happen so think of it like a big straw. It doesnt necessarily have to be submerged either just enough suction to pull water up. And none of this how do I know if i sucked up water if you did you WILL know it. I was doing no more than 2.5k coming around a corner when i hit a low spot and blew the motor. I pushed it home thinking maybe i just fried the battery (praying i didnt lock it) and we tryed to push start it and let me tell you ive never seen a car stop on the dime like that after you let out the clutch. Its not pretty but it happens.

I've had it happen to me.
If the water is deep enough, and you drive through it.
HIGH water, not puddles. Alot of you will have nothing to worry about. If you live in a city like Houston where 4 inches of rain an hour isn't uncommon, BE Very carefull.
When it happened to me I was exiting the freeway, it was raining really hard (the kind that drops 4+ inches an hour) as soon as I hit the feeder road it was too late. The car coasted to a stop, and it was dead. I bent 2 rods.

So please guys, if you hadn't had it happen to you, don't guess. Bad information could get someone in trouble.

if your going to be fording your car across a river get a snorkel, for normal city driving you should be fine, if the water is going up to your fog lights then you can worry other than that get it go for it, if you need to ford a river its a 2 sec disconnect from the TB to get across and reconnect no biggy

Submerging into water. If you don't have high water, don't worry about it. Puddles do not constitute as high water.

Seriously, like I mentioned in another thread, it is almost impossible to hydrolock your car from small puddles and just wet roads. You would have to switch to submarine mode and run into a lake to even worry about that.

After I installed my CAI I realized that thing is protected by the bumper, bottom plastic covering, and the wheel well. There is no way a small puddle will damage your car.
