CAI and car washes?

hey guys, all the hydrolocking worries seem to be geared toward driving in the rain and puddles and such.

what about in the car washes? like the one with the coin operated wands? would there be a chance that by spraying the front of your bumper or in the wheel well or something could soak the filter? that would suck if i could never wash my car in the winter...

anyways, i'm going to be installing mine tomorrow... i just wanna be sure that when i wash my car i should watch out for something if anything.

Should not be a problim

You have to get alot of water to hydro lock

I have had CAI on cars and washed them weekly with no trouble

He's right it would take quite a bit of water to do any damage. Like standing water....
Mist and sprays will not hurt, unless you put the wand up your CAI, LOL just kidding!

Hoanger, I have driven my car through so many car washes and used so many power sprayers, and yard hoses. Your car is fine. Look at where the filter sits. Unless you've cut out your foglight holes you're fine.

That isn't going to happen never. you have to submerge the intake into a puddle with the engine running in order to damage your engine.

along the lines of what he is saying, the Spring of '05, the town I worked in in Italy got hit real bad with rain. One of the roads flooded. Bad. I didn't know how deep because it had never gotten that bad before. Well, I had an SRI on my lowered Del Sol. It chugged and choked and spattered but it made it through. I swear the car coughed and cleared it's throat then took off like usual.

But I will never drive through a puddle that large. Hell if I see one. I'll back down the street if I have to.

Like others have said, you won't have any hydrolocking problems unless the filter is completely submerged in water.

If you do get your filter wet, you should dry it out as best you can to get maximum performance. If your filter is wet, water is clogging the filter, which means less air is getting through. You're not likely to get your filter wet in a regular car wash. You might have to be careful if you do an underbody wash, though.

just remember, its like driving in the rain, spraying water to your filter wont do any harm. If you SOAK it in a puddle of water, then you will have bent valves and etc.

If you are paranoid, you can buy an Injen HydroShield, that covers over the filter.

The plastic covering/protection/airdam/spoiler thing under the car protects that spot pretty darned good as long as all of the pop screws. I don't think the underbody wash would do too much. Now on the Si's, you'd have to be careful of the wheel well skirts if you cut into them for the Injen intake. I didn't cut mine big enough so it's pretty sound in there.

I've take the bumper of enough times to say that, if you keep the screws in, it's pretty dry in there.

yeah i picked that up today as well with my intake, can never be too careful.

i think it should help a lot, and like atruhondagurl's story i think if that didn't kill the car, a car wash isnt going to do anything.

atruhondagurl; since you didnt cut your fender wall does it rub or anything like another member on here? (cant remember his name)

I did cut it. I didn't cut alot though. I have an extremely low car with 18s sitting very close to everthing. I get a little rubbing only when I turn the wheel all the way to the right.

oh i see, sorry i read it wrong. I cut a small piece also, a 4"x2" C-shaped piece, but when looking into the wheel well it looks like the CAI sticks out quite a bit.

I'm going with 17's and lowering with s-techs when summer rolls around, i think i should be fine with no rubbing issues considering you've got 18's and pretty much slammed lol.
