it says this is for the R18, how exactly does it help? does the HP come out faster at a lower rpm or something?

It's an Underdrive Pulley. Meaning it is a puts less drag on the engine by
slowing down the alternator

My friend had an underdrive pulley on his Maxima, another on his Legacy GT and both said it made the engine a little rougher. I don't know if this is true..but I would assume the gains from this are minimal..IMO spend your beans on something else, like a good steak!

Ok, we have had MANY discussions on here re: Underdrive Pulleys. Personally, I had an Underdrive Pulley set on my 98 Acura CL 3.0 and out of all my mods (i/h/e/pulleys) I saw the most gains from the pulleys. Some believe they suck, some believe they damage the engine, some, as me love em'

I don't see how the pullys would damage the engine, all it is doing is spinning the altenator at a slower speed... Making it easier for the engine to rev faster!

I agree, but some swear that the underdrive crank pullry damages the engine somehow...

if the pulley was somehow unbalanced it could certainly mess up your engine at high-revs. It could also happen if it wasn't mounted properly as well(flush to the balancer and centered on the crank). This would make the engine run a little rougher as well if it's just a little bit off center.

older engines used a harmonic sensor with the pulleys, those engines would become off balanced and damage would occur. the K-series does not. Feel free to swap it out.

I copy and pasted the following from http://www.NonStopTuning.com

Crank pulleys, attached to the outside of the crankshaft, are the source of power for a car's accessories. The alternator, power steering, water pump, and air conditioner are all belt driven units, attached to the crank pulley, that use horsepower from an engine to provide their own services. Underdrive pulley systems increase an engine's horsepower by reducing the power required to drive the external engine accessories. By replacing factory pulleys with carefully resized units, the accessories are slowed enough so that their performance does not suffer, but just enough so that more horsepower is sent to the wheels and put to the ground. Where horsepower should be!
Normally, underdrive pulleys like the units found at NonStopTuning will increase engine output by 8 to 15 horsepower! This increase results in quarter-mile time improvements of .2 to .25 seconds, easily making this modification one of the best "bang for your buck" modifications for any sport compact car or truck.

Another great benefit in replacing factory pulleys with underdrive units is reduced weight. Factory units, also referred to as OEM, are generally constructed from steel or cast iron. Pulley systems like those found at NST are constructed of aircraft quality aluminum, making them extremely durable while at the same time much lighter than their steel counterparts. This increased weight reduction results in less rotating mass on the engine's crankshaft which drastically increases the engine's ability to rev up to speed faster. Better throttle response = big grin on a driver's face!

Also, the weight savings from swapping the OEM pulleys with NST pulleys is crazy! Look at this.....

http://www.nonstoptuning.com/pKitHonCiv.htm

The Honda crank pulley is 74oz. and the NST crank pulley is 24oz

Overall, I don't think the pulley's will damage the engine, however they do underdrive all the accessories and if you are in a lot of stop and go traffic your alternator may not be sufficiently charge the battery, the powerstearing and waterpump systems are not working at full efficiency and if you are complaining about the air conditioning not performing at par now wait until you install a set of underdrive pulley's.
Sure theoretically they will give you a couple of more HP but in my opinion they are just not worth it. But for some people that need to spend their money trying to squeeze out a couple of extra ponies it will be worth it for them. I remember in the early days that some people were dumb enough to remove their airconditioning compressors just to get more horsepower. I even now know people that rather drive without A/C and their windows open in 99 degree heat and humidity just so they have a few more HP on hand.
