Injen CAI - Wear on pipe

I'm starting a different thread for this. For those of us that didn't cut the hole in the splash guard I'm advising you to check your pipe and take necessary steps. The wear you see is on the Sedan with Injen CAI installed. I didn't cut the wheel well. I've been noticing a metallic vibration during light gas pedal applied. If I took my foot of the gas it would immediately stop. I knew it was the CAI and here is the wear. I've throw away the directions but it did state that "failing to follow all directions will void the warranty." Here's why:

I'll keep watch on mine for this. I don't think I'll have the issue because it's bolted down so tight but thanks for looking out.

How do we fix this???!!! I was thinking of putting cloth or sumthing to soften the metal to metal touch but I'm afraid that the pipe might heat up alot and in an extreme case cause a fire

I doubt any fire would ignite given that position. I also considered cloth, cardboard, dampening material and cutting the sheet metal. I just finished slowly cutting away parts of the wheel well until I felt that I couldn't do any more to help it. It's now about 3/16" away from the sheet metal instead of touching it. It's idling right now and around 12:30am I'll take it for a spin. See ya then!

See....i got soo much shit on another forum for cutting my splash guard....
i had to cut it for the AEM cuz i knew it would vibrate off the wall....no one did...i installed it on another Si, and to prevent it from rubbing i put some foam tape in there for him.

then i switched to the injen CAI cuz i didn't like the operation of the AEM....and they advised to cut the splashguard also....they didn't have to tell me twice, cuz i could hear every little vibration and i'd rather avoid it....so i did and then posted a review with pics and got a lot of shit about cutting it.

i told everyone that if it's not cut then it would rub and sooner or later cut through the CAI piping....now here's proof..

sorry i didn't post my review it here cuz i couldn't bother with the BS again. I shoulda known though this site has more class than some of the others and posted the review here also.

I drove it around the neighborhood last night. And today I've gone to work and home and to work and it's been fine. If anything changes I'll let you know.

There were two pieces of the wheel well that touched and that's right where the CAI was touching. So I cut little, curved pieces out until the plastic was no longer influenceing the pipe. I tightened the pipe down to the vibramount. I could shake it with my hand, but I don't hear any more metallic vibration.

Well, if the vibration is enough to slowly cut into the metal pipe, then I will assume it's strong enough to cut threw rubber or foam. Try it out and let us know.

Simple Fix
I just put a Hose clamp like the one you use to hold the CAI to the throttle body, Lined it up over the wear mark and tightend it down snug. Now it will wear on the clamp, which is much harder than the CAI, and in time if need be I'll just replace it.

then all you have to do is to buy you a fire extinguisher.

Wait, so when you cut the wheel well lining, do you actually have to cut into it (i.e. expose the cai to the wheel well itself)? In the injen cai review posted for the si, they actually had to cut out a portion of the wheel well...is that the case?

I'm going to reexamine soon. Under hard excelleration I can sometimes hear a short burst of metal clanging. Damn CAI pipe is gonna wear through if I don't do something soon. I figure if there's a hole in it I can probably just pay someone to weld a bead on top. I think that would work.

Ive heard from SI owners and Coupe owners alike, saying they didnt cut thier splash guards out for the install. When i get my SI i dont want to cut the splash guard for the Injen CAI,it will probably be a bitch to install but i like that clamp hose idea of putting it there so it wears on that and protects the piping.

Damn injen, putting my cai on backorder (same thing from AEM, but glad I pulled outa that one while I could). Just to clarify: to topic starter: when you installed it, did it fit snuggly between the sheet metal and wheel well, or did it just move around? When you cut the wheel well, did you have to cut through it to the wheel compartment, or just some fringe area that doesn't ruin the wheel well itself?

It fit very snuggly and after the cuts were made it didn't touch except under hard acceleration I could hear rattling. The cut in the wheel well can be seen from the wheel compartment. But it's not that bad, not what I was thinking it would be when I read the Injen instruction sheet. I'll update again soon. I'm thinking Saturday night I'm going to tackle the rattling. I might use a clamp and foam combination - haven't really decided. I'm just worried that a hole has been worn through by now....

'til tomorrow.
