how to negotiate buying a new car

I am interested in buying or finance a new Honda Civic coupe
I've read some articles of how to negotiate with the dealer.
you know how tricky dealers are......
what are some of you guy's experience?
what do I have to watch and expect?
any local dealer I should avoid.
I went to the one on Kingsway, Van (cannot say names here) and wasn't that good.
thanks in advance.

Ask your parents to negotiate the deal

call around to all local dealers..have them compete over the phone on the best price they'll give..and keep doing that until it hits a price you like..

take it one step further and get pre-approved through your bank and walk into the dealer with the best price w/the check..don't tell them about it and once you get the guarentee on the price throw the check at them and BLOW THEIR SOCKS OFF! b/c they don't screw you w/their crappy finance "deals"

Don't be so eager, and have a willingness to walk away. If you come off too eager, it's all gravy for them.

Take your time...it's a huge investment. So you don't need to make a decision over night.

GOOD LUCK!!

Know everything about the car before you go in, also, know exactly which model, method of payment, color, extras that you want. Dont tell the dealer any of this, just go with the flow and let them know your very interested in buying a new car soon
. Test drive, and bull****, be nice, be smart, talk about the weather.
Once you found the car you want to buy, Tell them your ready to buy today, but only if they drop the price. let them know your shopping around for other cars as well for example the mazda 3, make sure you know everything about those cars as well.
Get salesman to talk to manager about lowering price, sometimes this part takes hours, Be ready to leave the dealership if you are not happy. There are many many dealerships to visit.
when you are happy with the deal, sign the paper. But remember, its a two way game, You get a car for a price your happy with, and the dealer makes a sale. So work as a team, let him know that you know whats up, and you will both be happy in the end. Just dont be a prick straight up from the start. Also, if the salesman is a ass, just ask to deal with another salesman. If that doesnt work, speak to the sales manager, let them know you were going to buy a car today, but now your taking your business elsewhere.

thanks guys:

one of my friend said its best to buy in July or Aug, any comments?

also, I have some questions:

the LX coupe that I am looking at does not have a chrome exhaust pipe.
can the SI (Oval) or the ELX (Round) one fit the LX?

what does the alarm option $495 give you? worth it?

anyone got the CF (carbon fiber) interior trim? real CF material or sticky?

thanks

Buying at the end of the month is the best time. Ask to view their invoice price(what they paid for the car) Try and negotiate a price Out the door below or as close as you can to that price.

Honest dealerships won't hesitate to show you what they paid for the car. You can also look at kellybluebook to see average invoice prices and what to expect. Just do some research.

There are enough dealerships in Metro Van that have internet sales managers/reps now that if you're not keen on dealing with them face-to-face you can simply email them.
This also helps you avoid getting caught up in the heat of the moment and agreeing to a deal that might not be as good as you can get and also enables you to query multiple dealers without doing all the actual legwork.
Good luck :-)

I went to one dealer and got a verbal quote of $22500 for a new 09 LX model coupe
with these options:
leather wrap steering wheel
blue lighting interior
alarm system
this is a cash buy price excluding taxes.
I don't think this is the lowest price I get.
what do you guys think?
thanks

if it's brand new that's a good deal. Go on craigslist, you can find a barely used SI for about $20,000 + - $2000

This is 2 models below the Si, though with the interior lighting and alarm it seems like a decent price. If your in Vancouver I would check on prices south of the border, you may be able to get an ex for that price.

I found out that the "I'll take my business elsewhere" line get's a few grand taken off after bickering with them. I got my si coupe brand new in 2006 (it's a 07) for 21k out the door because I called around and got the dealers fighting for my business...and when I decided to go for a certain dealer, I'd always say "i'll take my business (and money) elsewhere" and they would say, "we can take another $500 off and that's the best we can do" hahahah. dude, play with their head as much as they play with yours.

thanks for your advise, I spoke to 3 different dealers.
took one dealer's quote and let them play against each other.
the dealers here in Western Canada are very tricky
they are telling me there is not much profit in selling a civic coupe, true or not? I really don't know.
I would jump right in if they offer $2000 off.
sound like all these BS $1500 cash incentive (they make you pay cash)
$1000 Royalty rebate, $888 car show special are discounts offered by Honda Canada.
The local dealers are using these figures to make me think WOW, I am getting $4500 off the MRSP.
they don't discount anything from their MRSP price tag ..... WTF
get my point?

if it's a Si, their resale value doesn't really go down. Dont listen to their "we'll give you this much off" BS. it's the bottom line on the contract that you need to look at. I've also found out that the "extended honda care warranty" is crap too. I paid $1800 extra for that hoe. They just want your money. pissed me the heck off lol.

I was quoted 23,000 for a brand new 2008 Civic Si 4 door from The Honda way in Abby.

The car is still in their showroom, so I would go check it out.

I also believe Middlegate honda in maple ridge has a silver coupe SI and a silver 4 door SI, both brand new 2008's and they are asking 23,500.

If you are looking used... There is a Blue 2006 Si with 35,xxxkm's going for 17000, I looked at it but picked my car up as the paint was better.

I got my car for 17,600. Its a 2006 Si in Habi Pearl with 33,xxx km's in showroom condition.

If you are even thinking of getting an Si, spend the extra $$ now. I drove my friends LX 5-spd a few days ago... compared to my Si its BORING.

Here is one Si

*******2008 HONDA CIVIC Si SEDAN**BRAND NEW**

it appears the coupe sold. Also notice, you save an additional $1000 if a family member owns a honda. Thats 22,750 for a brand new 08 Si. Hell of a deal, I tried to buy it but I couldn't get a loan big enough.

If they can do 22,750 for an 08 Si, I would venture they can do 20,000 if you can find an 08 LX or 21,000 for an 09 LX.
