Am I asking for trouble?

I signed up for my first auto-x event.

The thing is I'm getting second thoughts. I recently was layed off from work and I'm concerned about the amount of "damage" I will do to my car. Specifically tire and brake wear.

While I'm able to support myself without a job for a number of months, replacing tires and brakes isn't in my budget.

So do you think I can make it through one event without screwing myself or should I back out of the event?

They said to expect as many as 6 runs but this is the first time they have run at this location so no idea what the track/speeds will be like.

Interesting list of cars I will be running against. Seems like alot of "little" cars. Car list - I'm in the Production street tire under3L [G]

Don't back out. If you are worried about causing excessive wear to your vehicle, then just don't push it as hard.

That's for you to answer. You know your finances. Do you have money in the bank? When do you think that you'll have another job? Things to consider. If you don't have plenty of money in the bank, I wouldn't do it, but if you do, you can, but just don't downshift into the wrong gear or anything and bend a valve or anything.

Haha, even if I had a job I would be screwed if I mis-shifted and blew my engine.

I suppose I'll stay in. I'd be kicking myself forever if I didn't participate. No idea how I can be expected not to push her hard though. Sorta seems like it defeats the purpose :)

Actually, even though it's not in my budget I might use this as an excuse to fry my brakes. I really can't stand the noise my Hawk HPS's make. I feel so ghetto slowing down at a light and hearing squeeeeaaaaak.

stay in it. one recommendation, if you care about your car and its an 08, use painters tape to avoid any rock chips.

are you married, do you have kids, GF?

use the tires and brakes to go to job interviews... after you get a new job, you can go. it'll always be there.

These pussies have an income. You'll see some day if you have car trouble and you're unemployed. Easy to talk big on the internet.

Haha, no fighting on the forums guys. Were better then that.

But in all seriousness, I don't have a wife or kids, nor do I own a home so finiancially I just have me to take care of. The GF, well she has her own job and crap so no worries there. That being said I'm in for sure.

Why did you say if it's an 08? Won't my 06 get just as many rock chips?

Where should I put the painters tape? Just the front bumper? Maybe tape off around the wheels too?

Cover the whole car in tape?

Tape off anything you wanna protect. I would do the lights at minimum.

I have done lots of AutoX on many different vehicles, I have yet to break anything.

You will really enjoy it, and the amount you will learn on your first day is incredible. Don't worry about scrubbing your tires on the first day out.

I would suggest:

1) Emptying your car of the crap.
2) The seatbelt ratchet to make sure you are not going anywhere. (Recline seat, lock, seat belt, then sit it up.
3) After 1st gear... leave it in 2nd. Don't change gears and keep both hands on the wheels.
4) Don't try to be fast, drive smooth, and you WILL be faster.

Just some tips to save you some concern and trouble.

-Steve

At a good AutoX course this shouldnt be a concern, should only be cones out there. But if you did, most likely not covered if you are honest with them.
