sticky or wider?

I'll keep it simple: a sticky 205/55/16 Dunlop Z1 or less sticky 225/50/16 Pirelli Nero M+S?? Going on 16x7 Rota Slipstreams
I know there are other tires, these are the ones I have to choose from. Which one would be the best choice for a car that will see a couple track days every few months and will never be driven in bad weather?

uhhh...id go with the 225/50's

Not really.

Go with the Dunlop if those are your only two choices.

A 205 will fit on a 7" wheel. Plus, the Z1 is a summer tire, it has a "sticky" compound compared to the Pirelli which has a M+S rating and therefore must work in a much wider temp. range and is therefore not as "sticky".

I know the sticky says a 225/50/16 is not recomended, but I've seen a few 8th gens with them. Is there a rubbing problem?

Why cant you get sticky and wide??
205 is alright, i have them on my wheels and am happy, but i dont really race around to hard. So for you , it might be different.
Dont forget that alot of high performance imports came stock with 205 wide tires, typeR for example.

My street tires and my race tires are both 225/50/16. No issues whatsoever.

Without looking at the offered sizes for the Z1, do they offer anything in a 215 that would work? Quite honestly the Dunlop Z1 (now officially called Z1 Star Spec) runs much wider than most normal tires, especially compared to an all season tire such as the Nero M+S. My guess is that the 205 on the Z1 would be comparable in width to a 215 on the Nero. So in this case, if these were the only two choices, I would take the Z1 with better, stickier compound that's not really that much skinnier in reality.

This suggestion of course assumes that you're looking for maximum performance, which will not be had out of an all season tire. But if you're looking for longevity, the Nero will definitely last longer (higher treadwear ratings).

Example from phillyscca.com: 225 Dunlop vs. 215 Azenis

I know 225's are wider already, but that's pretty significant. And that's against an Azenis, which also tend to run a little wider than most normal tires.

Another example from sccaforums.com

Here a pic comparing the new Direzza Z1, RE-01R, Neova, and 615. 245/40-17 size.

Some initial observations:

- The Z1 and the Neova have a 9.5" tread width, the RE-01R is approximately 9.0" wide if shaved.

And another: 235 Z1's compared with 225 Hankook RS2's

The Dunlops have been stated as being on par to better than the Bridgestone RE-01R, depending on what facet you're looking at from a performance perspective. But definitely seem to be a very solid tire.
