Short AutoX vid

Went auto crossing today for the first time! Had a FREAKING BLAST!!

My times got faster each lap...I ran a 65 first time out, then 61, 60, high 58, low 58, and then lastly a 56. Still A LOT more time to be had...I brake to early and get back on the throttle too late...and I didn't always have the best line. Basically, I need to be more aggressive, the car can go faster than I think it can!

But I didn't hit a single cone all day! I had a great time, and I can't wait to do it again. Here's the last half of my fastest run, I'm entering a chicane at the beginning, didn't get the rev match right on the 2-1 downshift (which is my it takes sooo long to get back on the throttle), slammed the throttle, chirped second, and then took the wrong line into the next corner, the car took off more than expected on the 1-2 upshift, and it threw me off!. Dang that was fun! lol

It was SCCA, STS. Although...one of the guys running it told me I was supposed to be in STX, it was a "technicallity"

I don't know why I'd be in STX....any ideas?

Because your car has a mechanical LSD, which is not allowed in STS (but IS allowed in STX).

Edit - by the way, I am jealous Wish we had "autocross" weather in March!

If you're not hitting cones once in a while, you're not driving hard enough!

Can't wait for our season opener at the end of March!

You should be running in GS if its a stock Si. The PAX index for GS is easier than STX or STS. But regardless, glad you had fun. Watch out though, its addictive :-)

The car's not stock...Springs and camber kits. The camber kits are what bump me up to the street touring class....but I though limited slips were allowed in STS IF it came stock on the car.

What class does everyone else run?

If you're a Si with those mods you're going to STX. You have a mechanical limited slip.

STX is correct. It's the class I run in. Only viscous limited slip are allowed in STS, and very few cars have those. Mechanical like ours bump you to STX.

Congrats on your first autocross. Be warned, it is freaking addictive. I started about a year ago, and now I try to make at least 2-3 events a month.

So some advice to a newbie . . . these took me months to learn:

1)Never try to turn and brake at the same time. You will plow forward like a mother. Brake, let off the pedal, turn, then back on the gas.

2) Aggressive feels faster (and is more fun) but it really isn't. I used to be all understeer squeal, spin out, and tire smoke. Now I'm totally Zen . . . just a little tire hum and my times have improved drastically. Better to find the correct line and then find the limits of the car.

Yeah, I know not to brake in a turn.

I've been honing my skills in Forza for a while now.

JUST KIDDING!

But seriously...generally, I wasn't pushing hard enough. The car had more in it. I was getting on the brake too early, and instead of easing on the gas while straightening up coming out of the turns, I exited the turn, got the car straight, and then stomped it. It was full throttle or no throttle! lol.

And good call on the viscous limited slip; I didn't remember the "viscous" part lol. My next event is going to be April 27th. I can't wait.

Well, there's a reason why "Brake, let off the pedal, turn, then back on the gas," is not the best idea. When you brake, weight transfers to the front wheels. When you let off the brake weight transfers to the rear as the front springs unload. When the nose uis moving up less weight is on the front wheels and they have less grip. If you try to turn immediately after letting off the brake, the car will understeer.

So there are two approaches that conteract this problem:

1) Brake in a staight line. Let off the brake early enough so the car has time to settle before you turn in

or

2) Brake in a straight line but don't let off the brake as you approach the turn. Just ease off a little as you start the turn. This will keep the nose planted. This is called trail braking.

Number 1 is easier to do and is good for very slow corners. But number 2, once mastered, is faster on faster corners.

Regards,
Alan
