Mazda RX8

Well here is the story:

I had mentioned to one guy at work that I would be getting a new Si. He then proceeded to tell me that I should race this one other girl i work with. She drives a 6spd Mazda RX8. In retrospect I should have never opened my mouth.....everyone now comes up to me asking to race

So my question is this.........provided I was a real good driver, how bad would I lose to the rx8? We have a 1/8 mile drag strip near us that charges $7 to race(call it grudge night thursdays). I feel if its a close race...ie she wins buy a car or 1/2 a car, I would still feel like it was a win in my book cause i spent about 8-9k less on a similar performing car. Any ideas....?

You can take her, shes heavier, riding on 18's, and the whp isnt bad at all, but still I think you can take them..Think of yourself racing a Cow, so that you can get your self-esteem up..

While this has been covered a few times, lower your air pressure in the tires and remove as much dead-weight as you can, including the spare-tire (don't let her see you do it though :) ). That should give you a bit of traction and a slightly better power-to-weight ratio. You'll need it against the 6 speed. Unlike the auto's, the 6 speeds are quick.

However, nobody's putting a gun to your head. If you don't feel you're ready, don't do it. Wait until you feel fairly confident that you know how your car will react to your inputs, how you need to shift. Once you're ready, then go race her.

Thanks guys........I feel a little more confident now. I have the feeling that if I do end up losing I will take more flak then if she loses(dont ask me why). I guess I am easier to pick on cause I'm the new guy at work(just started March 27th).

Agreed. I'd wait it out. Eventually they'll leave you alone, but I'd honestly say they're just picking on you. Get to know some of the people there first because should you lose, some of them could brand you for life. lol

When i say "just started" I mean I just started full time work. I co-oped at this place after i graduated last year in may for 8 months. I work in the same department, so I know everyone very well. They still like to rag on me from time to time though. They are a good bunch of people. I just started work at GE Power Systems(develop and manufacture gas turbines)here in Greenville, SC. I am with the simulation and modeling group.......we model control systems and test out changes basically.

You have the RX8 beat already! Just tell her you have more interior room, rear seats that fold down, better gas mileage, don't have a add oil every 1500 miles AND have a higher resale value. Let her see how smart you are. And add that you find it boring having to prove who has a better/faster car.

I think the Rx 8 will take you. only the autos are slow, the 6-sp are no joke. Unless she is a bad driver, the race will end up in her favor. I know a lot of you si owners will disagree, but i don't think si can take RX8.

Well I guess the only way to really find out is to race her.......best 2 out of 3 is what we decided on. She has been driving a manual a lot longer than I, so I would give the edge to her. She is by no means a professional.......but intermediate at best. I am more of a beginner/intermediate. I realize that its odd that I mention this because I still dont have my car. Dealership tells me I should have it this week, but they are very slow to update their system.

Good luck on your race, it might be hard to get to know it since you don't have it yet. But you do have a chance i guess, but stock for stock the RX8 is faster.

i dunno guys. the stock rx8 is pretty slow.. 0 60 times around lower sevens if im correct. the Si can easily manage 0- 60 in upper six's. as for quarter mile... i dunno, i still think you have a fighting chance, stock for stock.

Yeah that sounds about right, from what i heard/saw its the same as the rsx type S times, 0-60 that is. Wouldnt it be nice if the si could have been geared like the type s........wouldnt require shift to third to hit 60mph then.

Pulled on an RX-8

i drove a members SI yesterday on the thruway, testing out the new intake that we installed. As we were driving an rx-8 got on our ass so i decided to "hear" v-tec and take off. let me tell you, first of all the SI is amazing, second, the rx-8 didnt stand a chance, they tried but we pulled away pretty fast. I even slowed, let them catch and as they passed a lil i took off again, nose to nose at first , then we pulled ahead again. Wether it was auto or 6-spd, or the driver, a win is a win

SI > RX-8

RX8 six speed is faster than an si, i assume youraced the auto that has a lot less hp. i don't know why mazda did it that way but there are slow rx8s out there. But i believe that the 6sp will put a lenght or two on you. Being an si forum, i'm sure you guys will disagree.
