rolling a car - how likely?
Hey. I'm contemplating buying a set of 17x7 Kosei ks-ts for my 07 si coupe - car is stock, soon to have HFP suspension. Seller has a set of hoosiers A6 mounted. A friend of mine told me theres a risk of rolling the car with that setup. I asked wtf he was talking about he said "breakaway left-rights in a saturn (low-cg) on slicks make em roll" I can see that happening on an hard off camber turn, or if I hit a rut in the pavement. But with the hfp suspension and a decent alignment I think I should be ok. I don't understand why slicks would make a car rolling much more likely so I thought I'd try to get a decent explanation here. Threads like these make me think twice.

It’s highly unlikely, especially on a new or newer car. Most of those types of problems stem from other issues like old rubber bushings in the suspension failing, ball joints coming apart, ect. Generally these things wouldn't result in a roll, but a really bad day and a lot of damage. If you read any type of maintenance book, shop manual, or any type of racing information. There’s good advice in those books; “Before and after each event, check suspension, brake parts and fasteners for wear, damage, and proper torque."
Epically in a racing situation you put much more stress on components than everyday driving or even spirited driving. Some will say, "Oh Honda built the SI for racing purposes" and I agree with that; With the inclusion that it needs to be maintained like a race car if that’s it's application. Just trying to be helpful, try not to let the misfortune of few dissuade you, when the many have no issues. |

Sure it's possible but (as I said on your TOV thread) it's very unlikely. I've been autocrossing for 10 years now and have been to hundreds of events and have yet to see a rollover. I personally have been running the Kumho V710 (one of the stickiest tires you can get) and have messed up many times and have never even come close in my EG Civic (though the suspension is heavily modified)
Some friends of mine were at an event where a guy with a Geo Metro on stock suspension and R compounds did roll his car though... that's just asking for trouble... |

Rollovers are very, very rare in autocross. They do happen if there is some obstacle that trips your car when you are going sideways. They also happen when someone has a tall car, completely worn out shocks, sticky tires and they don't give up in a tank slapper. If you have a new stock Si, don't worry about rolling over even with R tires. BTW I am about to start the season with your exact same setup.
