i've beat my friend's cobalt ss s/c from a stop w/ i/rh/e about 1 1/2 car length when he was stock.. after he upgraded his car to a stage 2 (injectors, pulley, boost, etc.) he owned me sooo badly like a r18 tryin' to catch up to the k20. that's how miserable it was lol.. those cars are no joke.. they're pretty fast.. but again, they're s/c'ed. what if we were s/c'ed? we'll own 'em all day long!

So another way to put is:

a Cobalt SS needs a 2.4L engine and a supercharger to barely beat a less-expensive, classier, naturally-aspirated Si.

pwnd

Havn't chimed in on one of these Cobalt vs Civic threads in awhile but I had to bite on this.

Two ways to make power chachi...boost or compression.

Cobalts use boost, Civics use compression. The argument that Cobalts *need* a supercharger is just as stupid as if I were to argue you *need* high compression pistions. I get so sick of people crying that "if we had a supercharger..."

And less-expensive? Since when are Civic SI's less expensive?

Please show me one shred of information that would support this claim (note: I beat my friend around the local McD's parking lot is not factual information). Becareful where u look however...the internets can be a scary place and some information you find may be contradictory to your thoughts that the Civic SI will out-handle Cobalts. You fail...here you are:

............|\
............| \
............|_\
...______|__________
....\_S.S. FAILBOAT_/
.....\_____________/

Fact is...if you wanted a good *for* autocross you'd pickup something else (that wasn't FWD) if you wanted something *for* drag you'd pickup something else as well (that wasn't FWD..notice the trend?). That's all for now!

Well, the problem is the fact that most people are completely misinformed when it comes to cobalt ss/sc's and ion redlines. But, to be honest, what can you expect? I mean, for some reason people still say "all an srt4 is is a turbo'd neon" and when you try to explain that they are completely different (built) motors, strong srt trannys, etc. etc. the most common response is "it's still a neon."

I'll admit something here.. I haven't done a lot of reading on cobalt ss/sc's. But, on the other hand, I am a fan of the ion redline and considering they have the same powerplant and transmission I would think it would be a safe bet to say that they put down a similar amount of power, correct? Well, when it comes to stock ion redline they regularly dyno out around 220whp..
If you really want to get flamed, point out the fact that mazdaspeed 3's can't get a breath of fresh air to save its life and therefor they dyno just above ion redlines stock for stock.. Granted, a cai will fix most of your problem there, except for the fact that (from every source other than saturn.com) a stock ion rl weighs in just above a stock em2, which is 2550 lbs.. and that's with the competition package (which includes the addition of an lsd).

The major downfall of ss/sc's and ion redlines are simple.. They're supercharged fwd cars with way too much power to launch properly off the line, which completely murders their 1/4 mile times. The best remedy so far has been to simply tune it to cut all boost in 1st gear, and sometimes second also.

SS/SC is a 2.0L engine.

fwiw I hear they're going to put it into the new HHR - SS/SC

and I've heard Chevy isn't going to build the SC version of the Cobalt anymore.

Gotta give them the respect. The outside is kinda ugly but the engineering is pretty good.

i heard that too. i think they were having big problems so it was easier to just not make the current one with a supercharger and they probably will start working on another one.

Their deal with eaton is over and they didnt want to renew their contract. They will be switching to a turbo charger like the setup in the saab 9-3/ HHR SS.
