I thought elise's were fast?

I ran one yesterday he barely pulled on me when I was in 2nd gear. He definitely beat me, but not by much. What's up with that?

it was funny though, we came up to a red light and he couldn't stop, so he ran it. I stopped just fine though.

It really gets most of it's speed from the lack of weight not the power it produces. I think they look pretty cool though IMO.

Yeah, I believe they're 1.8L, 190 HP, 2562 LB. Not a smoker.

The Elise has the same 1.8L that came in the GT-S Celica's. It's powerband is quite narrow, and it's quite easy to fall out of the powerband, especially on shifts. If the guy could drive, he'd wipe the floor with you, but it's not an easy car to drive, so it's not surprising that you hung with him. I've heard other stories of 14-second cars hanging with what is actually a low 13-second Elise.

He wasn't taking you seriously. I've driven them enough times to know that it really is the most purpose built production race car on Earth. I can attest to its handling and its rate of acceleration/deceleration.

No offense, but if I owned an Elise, I wouldn't take a kid in an Si seriously either... Then again, I wouldn't street race regardless of what I was driving.

the hp/tq might be about the same as our cars...but when the car is about 900 lbs less than us that is a HUGE advantage. he could have taken you easily if he really tired.

i don't remember where i read it, but the lotus elise was considered one of the best handling cars in the world.

from wiki

111R

This Series 2 Elise model comes in European 111R version or a version sold in North America, called the Federal Elise. It is powered by the all-aluminium 189 hp (141 kW) Yamaha-designed, Toyota-produced 2ZZ-GE engine, has a Toyota gearbox and is acclaimed as the best version of the Elise to date, with tremendous performance numbers, with many tests resulting in 0–60 mph (0–100 km/h) in approximately 4.9 seconds or 4.7 seconds with the Sport Package.

The 2005 Lotus Elise was the first to be sold commercially in the United States, in the summer of 2004. Approval for the Elise, however, required intervention by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) who provided a three-year exemption for the car, as it had failed to meet US bumper and headlight regulations. All Lotus Elise cars manufactured after January 1, 2007 include the new headlights and 2.5 mph bumpers, although they are hidden in the front.

This model has been followed up by the 2006 Model Year Elise 111R and SportRacer models. Lotus made a limited edition (50 in the US) version of the Lotus Elise as well, called the Lotus Elise Sport.

2006 models also differ from the 2005 models in a few aspects. 2006 models sport LED tail lights, drive by wire (an updated ECU), improved gas mileage, as well as more comfortable seats.

Well, technically, the Exige would be more "purpose-built"

Oh, and yeah, the Elise uses the same Yamaha motor that's in the Corolla XRS, too. I think it's retuned to pick up ~10hp, but yeah, same engine.

Given that the Elise weighs just 19xxlb and has just under 200hp, it has about the same power/weight ratio as a LS2 GTO. 1900x2 = 3800lb... 200x2 = 400hp... Not exact, obviously, but it's pretty close.

Point being, if the Elise owner cares and can drive, the Lotus will demolish an Si that's anywhere near stock.

He wasn't trying or he was a horrible driver. Those cars are incredibly fast accelerating at low speeds, and their handing is amazing.

Quote:
When comparing the Elise, I noticed it has a 0-30mph of 1.6 seconds!! Normally we only hear about 0-60 and 1/4 mile, but I've always liked the 0-30 times since these are the great stoplight drags where you need to merge after about 100ft and whoever can blast up to that speed the fastest wins (yes, I sound like a little kid here!).

There was only one other car tested that hit the 0-30mph in 1.6 seconds: Subaru WRX STi. The Evo was a 1.7. The Carrera S was also a 1.7, and most of the cars went up quite a bit from there. The good news is that it still hit a 4.6 second run 0-60mph which is really, really fast. Consider the C6 Corvette with 400hp ran it in 5.0 seconds, also a manual trans. I owned a C6 6-speed and it was QUICK!

Everyone i've ever spoken with that has driven an Elise or Exige has said it's one of the most exhilerating driving experiences ever, and the car is brutally fast.

I want to drive one
