07 Si Vs. 05 RX-8

I was racing my friend who had a ’05 Mazda rx-8. We raced starting from a roll going about 40mph. he was pulling on me when I was in third gear. So I down shifted to 2nd gear, I started to creep up behind him slowly. By the time I was in 4th gear I was a half car length ahead of him. My civic Si was bone stock and the rx-8 had a CAI. I was wondering what you guys think if we started from the line. I know the rx-8 has about 230+hp. And my civic is just under 200hp. Do you guys think I am able to take him on?

Auto or stick RX-8.

The autos aren't worth building.

yeah, I'd say thats a total drivers race. The rx8 is just too heavy for that lack of torque, IMO

In reference to this post in the linked thread...

All things settled it is a drivers race but I would tend to nod in the general direction of the Si myself.

The thing you have to take account for is the word "healthy" like I mentioned. The early-generation Renesis engines are now being replaced the second they fail a vacuum test by Mazda because they're typically down on power and NOT healthy engines. Those can make power numbers just like a 100% motor, or can dyno a LOT less if the motor is on the way out. One could sit right beside you, and one could be buslenghts behind. It depends on who or what you run that day.

Another thing about the RX8 is that there have been over a handful of ECU reflashes from them from Mazda, and the newer ones WILL gain power over the old ones as they update the MAPS the cars run on. The newer ones actually have settings in 1st and 2nd and (I believe) 3rd that are different than 4th, 5th, and 6th. Mazda is really working hard to fix these cars, that is for sure! You have to give them respect for that.

The difference in speed between a 6-speed RX8 and an auto RX8 is night and day. Expect to completely destroy an automatic RX8. Yes, it's that bad.

So yes, the difference between a healthy RX8 and a unhealthy RX8 could be a night and day difference as well. They can run great, or they can run terrible.

Rotaries use oil as a way to cool the motor, so yes they will burn but it's by design. The newer ones are much more efficient when it comes to it and most owners report only losing about a quart of oil each oil change. Drive it a lot harder and that may go up.

You can pick up new RX8's around here for $24,000 out the door for a nice Touring model (which gets you 18" wheels and the Bose system). That car is an INCREDIBLE buy at that price and, when thrown on a road course, would have no problem at all showing an Si who's boss. Power-aside, they are great cars and about as energetic as it gets to drive. I constantly consider trading the Si in on one.
I have little to no idea about these newer gen Renesis engine. I do know the old ones in the RX-8 has major drivetrain loss or something because they would put down ridiculously low numbers on the dyno in comparison to its "marketed" specs. Otherwise, the RX8 has RWD and the Si would have a very slight weight advantage/LSD. More or less, I would say driver's race.

RX-8 are a great track cars. They are balanced 50/50, so they handle very well at the track.

I have seen some rx-8 at the track (not drag strip), and they run very well just out of the box. Than again its all about the driver.

After the race, the owners of the rx-8 typically added a whole quart of oil. Yes, those things guzzle oil when driven hard.

The rx-8 motor was suppose to be much improved over the old rx-7 (mainly the seals), but last year or so there was a major recall by Mazda for the seals.

Overall, the Si is much more refined inside and outside. Much better daily driver for a lot less $$$ and worry about oil consumption, etc.

My $.02

Yeah, I was searching the RX-8 as for a potential car (along with the Si), but I found out that the major drivetrain loss has not been fixed yet (though I may be wrong with the newer engines), and there was several on Autotrader/eBay/Cars.com for like 12-16k with only 15k-20k miles. It was a killer deal, though then again actual whp/tq and the difficulty of finding a rotary mechanic was something to consider for me. Tell your friend to get an Si, lol. RSX interior is nice though...

reading your post I found myself thinking you were a 4th grader that u had sucked on one too many sugar cubes....

RX8 = a poor mans sports car, not drag. Stock for stock they are a good match in the 1/4, like others said, its a drivers race. But on a road track put a good driver in one and kiss you FWD azz goodbye. Never heard about the oil burning thing, know a couple of people with them n they never have issues.

I like the interior of them, and the suicide doors. Comfortable ride inside let me tell ya. They're re-releasing the rx7 the same time as the supra and skyline, maybe then we'll see another car thats actually worthy of the title...

The RX-8's are definatly MADE for turning. My friend has an auto one(yeah, the autos are slow) and when I am following him, he leaves me in the turns badly. Just to show you how well these cars can handle, I was behind him on a long tight turn while he had 4 people in the car and I was by myself and he still left me. Oh well, as soon as we left the turn I caught right back up to him. LOL, 4 people in that car= NO acceleration.

They do handle extremely well... my cousin all most got one... he ranted for a week about how well that car handles... he ended up getting a DC5 instead though

Yeap. The RX-8 is definitely not a drag car, but it sure can dance in the canyons like a ballerina on stage! In the hands of a capable driver, it should be able to go head to head with an Evolution & maybe even pull away from one in the canyons! ( 'o') !

Take the RX-8 to the drag strip & it will get toasted. Hahahaha! But then again, who'd buy an RX-8 to waste a perfectly balanced driver's car at a drag strip? ('_' ) ??

crack killz....

an evo beats half million dollar cars around tracks in the hands of a good driver never mind an rx8, we gave it credit because it very well would probably leave an si on a road course but an evo your talking a car that would probably lap you around a track lol. If I could afford one of those, mmmmmmmmm, the fun nights in the snow and rain I would have...
