Hondata reflash review

After a full summer of shooting for 13's without the reflash, I submitted to the vtec gods and purchased the hondata reflash back in december. Being I live in the frigid state or North Dakota, I wasn't able to test it out until the past week. My first impression was...wow. Hondata did a VERY good job at making the power and vtec engagement VERY smooth. The crossover is pretty much gone, and the vtec engagement isn't really noticeable....at all. That exact point is why I am writing this. After I had installed the DCRH and catback, along with the AEM CAI, the vtec engagement was very noticeable and I think most honda fans would enjoy the feeling/sound at 5600. The calm buuuuuuuurrrrr to rrrRRRAAAAPPPPPPPP is something anybody can get addicted too! But with Hondata, that is all gone. The car is very noticeable faster, and pulls so strong all the way through the power band, but I think someone that isn't looking for a bunch of speed, may have more fun with bolt ons without the reflash. That is my personal feeling/experience. I am shooting to be in the elite for 1/4 mile times, so this reflash is very necessary and gladly accepted, however if I was 16-18 I would probably regret getting the reflash...

There's my $.02

So even though the vtec engagement is smoothed out(compared to a stock SI where you get that massive dip) do you still get a noticable audible sound when vtec does engage?

Yeah your still going to hear Vtec, especially if you have I/H/E. The only difference is Hondata eliminates the cross-over "drop" so that "kick" will more than likely be gone

So was the Hondadata worth it? And does it work with Nitrous? I am contamplating having a 55 shot ZEX system installed. Wonder if the Hondadata would work with that?
Also I am interested in the gas mileage question. Is there a big loss in mileage after the flash? I do actually care about mileage that's why I went from a 350 HP Dodge Daytona Hemi with an average of 11-13 mpg to a 197 HP more fun to drive 26-28 mpg average Honda Civic Si.
So far I don't miss the Hemi. Maybe the comfort a bit but not the mileage.

gas mileage doesn't change as the fuel curve / afr ratio was not touched ...

u will see a drop in ur gas mileage if u continuously go into vtec though ...

nitrous was not tested ... but it should work like it would on a stock car as ignition etc was not touched.

Does anyone know if it has an impact on our cars security system? I know it's a weird question.

Secondly, Sicky, what do you think the effect would be (hypotheticaly) on hp with the skunk 2 composite IM and Hondata. Do you forsee any issues?

IMO, I can barely hear vtec engage. With the DCRH, catback, and CAI, the engagement was as loud as most of the upper end B series stuff. With the reflash, you CAN hear it but I would have to say 1/5th as loud as prior to the hondata reflash. The only reason I pointed that out, was to some people that may be a negative. To those that thirst for power it is a positive.

One thing I don't want people to get confused with, is that I am saying that the Hondata reflash doesn't do anything, or isn't worth the money, or makes any part of the Si's performance less impressive. It is really hard to portray what I am saying without showing you in person a before and after. The vtec engagement being quieter is a good thing, but it takes away most of the aggressive sound most DOHC vtec/i-vtec fans love.

Bottom line is, I am very pleased with Hondata. The car is much quicker, and pulls very strong much earlier in the power band. I will miss the loud engagement of the larger cam (ricer in me haha), but to me the small sacrifice is very much well worth it!

Anybody know if Hondata is planning on adjusting the ignition timing and/or air/fuel on the reflashes in the future?

This is off topic but anyone else notice that Hondata will soon have K-Pro for the D17's, Elements, and S2K's.
