I've been noticing the AutoX thread lately and just noticed there was no official Track / HPDE threads, mostly threads from MikeJ that get a lot of attention. So I think this should be the official Track / HPDE talk and chat thread.
I'll attempt to post up any links I find here that relate to this thread so they're easily found.
Name: Alex
Cars: 2009 Civic Si (Just a progress sway bar on it), 1998 BMW M3 Sedan (Track Rat)
Info: This will be my second track season and will be my first with the Civic, last year I had the pleasure to drive at New Hampshire International Speedway, and Watkins Glen, in a number of different e36's.
we have deer... 2 cars in front (in the earlier video) barely clipped a deer that fell to the ground but was able to scramble off. Fortunately it's not a high speed track so not quite as dangerous as the main track. This dude, however, was unfortunate enough to get tagged by a deer an hour earlier and a few hundred yards away on the main track:
Rain is good for the civic... all those high hp rwd cars are suddenly easy pickings
And what is up with that windows down rule? It annoys me even in the dry just thinking of the drag and it makes an incredible mess if you do off off into the dirt. In the UK I seem to remember it was mandatory to have windows up.
btw, 2 weeks on CL5+ pads all round on the street and no issues with noise or cold bite so far. Actually they grab better than stock or ds2500s from cold and then a bit more as they warm up. Not got them properly hot yet...
Not the greatest pictures but here are some from my local track:
Best of all, when I spin out, there's no sand, just tons of grass that gets stuck between the tire bead and the wheels. I've had air leak out of the tires because of it
Odd thing happened yesterday, my brother is thinking about get a 330i ZHP (comes with M bits and a more aggressive cam) they're a good price about 14k for a little under 100k. So I was on my way home and thinking about if I wanted to sell the SI and get one, as I'm doing so a FG2 comes screaming by on my right had my windows open and the vtec sounded great put a smile on my face think I'll keep and it just mod it to kill the 330.... Muhahhahaha..
Well, it's only been a couple of months, so I'm not sure about long term durability. From inside the car, the back of the car sounds more like a woosh of air flowing through, and there is definitely more sound coming through the floorboards. At idle, it's only slightly louder than stock. I haven't heard it from outside the car at speed, but my buddy said it sounded really good while at Lime Rock.
It's definitely not raspy. Here's to hoping that it stays this way.
Funny thing. I had the Vibrant w/hfc on stock exhaust and no angled 02 bung(? Forgot the technical term for it), No issues. Got a Greddy SE and got a CEL immediately. Angled 02 bung fixed it. This was just before FP was available. No drone, quiet start up, awesome post VTEC. Of course, power was limited compared to catless headers w/70mm exhausts though.
What urethane grade are you using? I've had the U70A for a little while now and like it. Keeps my shifting a little more fluid. BARELY noticeable unless the AC is on.
Is there any issue with running just 1 stiffer mount, with the other 2 stock and putting too much load through the single mount or fittings? Maybe I'm just being paranoid...
On a different topic I came across this last night:
Made for quite a good read. I was already doing it to some extent, but I think I need to practice more...
I'm not sure about this part though:
At the apex (also known as the “clipping point”) of the turn, fully unwind the steering wheel and let the car “run free” under acceleration.
If I take this literally I expect I will be heading for the dirt off every apex but I think he is just embellishing the point and that he really means start to unwind the steering at the apex.
Anyone planning on attending limerock in august through scda or emra? Scda seems cheaper and I can just time using my go pro lol. Ill be hitting up some autocross at thompson with cartct next month.
I'll be @ LRP with EMRA in August. Working on the the previous event's video tonight, hopefully I'll get it done. Lap time was a 1:06, a full 2 seconds faster than my previous best. The mods are effective!
Jeez LRP is like a big fast autoX, NHIS probably isn't much longer though... You ever get out there? It's kind of a fun track the bowl is pretty cool and it's a nice elevation change.
No, I haven't been to NHIS, but I hear it is fun. EMRA doesn't compete there, and I'm trying to do well with points. I remember the SCDA going there every year when I ran with them, but I didn't make it up there.
Thanks jrickerm
I left my SD card in the office yesterday, so I didn't get to put the video together. In the mean time, here are some of the pictures I got from EMRA's photographer:
I might do emra. I'm hoping I can just skip the trial school since I kinda went through that at CartCT. Of course I'm not against instruction as long as I'm not losing track time.
Only cons are the sizes that are available. Unless you run 255/40 and 225/45. I was looking for 235/40 but they don't make them, but for my staggered set it will be good.
i ran 235/40/17 595 rsr on my 17x7.5 rims and i felt like they were fine.. i didn't feel the bubbly-ness like people said i would.. for any time reference.. i ran a 2:10 at CVR CCW on my first time there
Just had my first track day of the season, managed to chase down a wide body 928 with huge r compounds all the way around (I was on SS in the M3) and my brother managed to pass a GTR in run group 4, kid had no skill but you can do crazy things in that stupid car. Video sucks can't see the track at all, I'll have to play with the settings and see if I can make it better, car did great will be taking it to the Glen in late July and Tremblant in August, may take the Civic as a back up in case my M decides to kill itself, if I do, should I upgrade to TL-S brembos? My brother and I cooked PFC-01s on the stock M3 brakes.... Which are pretty damn good.
every rotor will crack under the right circumstances.. save yourself the trouble and just buy DC5R brembos lol
