I am becoming a fan of VW diesels... Good story follows.

In a recent issue of Grassroots Motorsports, there was a "test" to see if it was possible to have fun with cars (regarding competition in autocrossing and road course events) and yet show some responsibility regarding fuel economy.

Their benchmark for economy was a new Civic Hybrid Sedan, which was the slowest overall and a poor handling car mostly due to the super-hard low rolling resistance tires. Yet in an 80 mile trip including track time, it used about 1.5 gallons of gas giving it almost 55 mpg combined. Amazing.

It was also against a base MINI prepped for national level autocrossing, an early Miata setup to be a cool toy, a stock 99 Vette (30+ mpg on the 80 mile trip - credit that to a silly tall 6th gear), and a modified New Beetle TDI.

Regarding the New Beetle... The suspension was reworked and all, but I was impressed with the power gains with nothing more than an ECU upgrade w/ boost control, matched injector nozzles (not the whole injector), and a free flow intake and exhaust. In all, under $750 spent on engine stuff.

Power went from approximately 90 hp and 150 lb/ft torque stock to 123 hp and 412 lb/ft torque!!!!

The downside... All that power without an LSD to help it put power down coming out of the corners.

The plus side... Over 40 mpg around town.

Now if someone would bring a diesel hybrid to market... Imagine 70 mpg and 700 lb/ft torque. Badass.
