Stick noob looking for tips...

I've got an 06 LX m/t bone stock that I've been driving for two months. This is my first stick shift, I picked it up quickly but havent done any hard driving, ie ive yet to break 5k on the tach.

Id like to run on an abandoned stretch of pavement (thats been outta use for years since the city put in a new route) with some friends, but I've go no idea on when to launch, shift, etc... My previous race experience was mashing the gas on my automatic till the end of the road, so Im a regular tabula rosa. Tips, advice, dire warnings, clue me in before i embarrass myself!

shoot man, ive never driven ure car but i can definately give u some pointers on how i drive mines. I dont have a civic BTW. Rev and hold the tach at 2krpm while in first with clutch in. Pretend the gas pedal is an egg, dont smash the egg dude. POP the clutch, soon as ure done wheel hopping give it 100% throttle. If u dont give a damn about your clutch u can lightly feather to control the wheel hop. Hopefully someone else can chime in for you.

heres how i launch my MT LX coupe.

hold revs steady at 3K, ease the clutch out and when the car starts to move just gun it and let the clutch out, you will get wheel spin and when its done its almost time to shift.

try not to power shift or anything like that just yet cause first to second is tough, i've grinded before doing that and it isnt good at all.

so just dont over do it on your first run

It's really a matter of learning the techique of working your left and right feet in sync. Throttle input and clutch release will be very different depending on the circumstances. Learn to drive the car sedate before you go ruining your clutch looking for perfect racing starts.

A good way to learn how to coordinate your feet is to find a slight incline. Stop in the middle. You now have the clutch depressed as well as brake. Now try to balance your car in the same spot just using by working the clutch and gas. Granted you don't want to slip the clutch too long but practicing this teaches you were the clutch begins to grab as well as how sensitve your throttle is or isn't. Become comfortable driving the car before you search for the boundries.

Ive got over 4500 pizza delivering miles on it already, so I'm pretty good with start/stop/start traffic and inclines, etc... Just not experienced at getting it moving from high rpms =) I dont plan on doing any powershifting, just too much chance of really boning myself.

When should I shift to second, Id read that r18's arent meant to be taken to redline... so 5k, 5.5k, or somewhere close to there?

I take mine up to redline... I personally think with an inline four, your powerband is going to be in the higher RPMs. I can understand why a V6 engine would not go to redline.. but I think inline 4 is a slightly dif story.

If I'm going to go for any sort of spirited run and want to burn some rubber, 3K launch FTMFW!!!!!
