I've been hesitant to post my experience, but decided I would but shine it in a better light. I'm ready to take my lumps from the members.
I was driving home from work the other day, on the last 10 mile stretch of my 43 mile commute, the first 30 are on the interstate. Now I'm on 6 lane, 55mph boulevard, first at the stop light in the left most lane. Keep in mind, I'm anxious to get home and I am often the first to take off when the light turns green. As I do there is a red car next to me, who is keeping up with me, so I give it more and so is this other car. I'm winding thru the first and second and keeping up a side by side going thru 3rd, getting caught up in the moment and the adreniline rush and then thoughts of the all the threads I've read here about street racing. I look at the speedo and I'm between 65 and 70 and climing and I say to myself. "Self, this is stupid, you are street racing, someone could get hurt or killed or you could get caught". I let off the gas, shifted into 6th and just cruzed while the new style mustang GT kept going for a while longer. Thanks to the sensable people who keep pointing out the obvious good advice to "take it to the track!" I'm a responsible 43 year old with a wife and kids and I lost it for a moment. This forum and members may have saved me on a few different levels. On the the other side of the coin, I'd like to know what would of happened had we have been at the track, because I was keeping up pretty well against that particular car and driver. |

Good for you!!!
Here's a link to where you can find an SCCA region in your part of Florida... Go find an autocross and have a killer time safely and legally! http://www.scca.com/Inside/Index.asp?Reference=436798 Besides, autocrossing 5 ~ 10 times will make you a better driver than 99% of the public. Just KNOWING you can then outdrive all the street racer pussies is reason enough to smile. Anthony "Mario" Crea NNJR-SCCA |

Good going Doolie. Nothing wrong with taking it easy on public roads. Plus it is good practice to give your kids the right example. If you want to get out some driving aggression, try looking around for some auto-x events. You'll have fun, learn a lot, and have the confidence of knowing your limits and not needing to show them off. |

Just because he's 43 doesn't mean he doesn't know how to live. God, Batang. ![]() Most girls I know have an SUV or a Audi or Bmw at 30 and a kid seat in the back. Not I! Okay, so my hubby has a Volvo that I picked out.... I'll still push it in that thing when I have it around but not like how I push the Si. ![]() |

Thanks for all the positive feedback!
At 43, my 2 teenage girls have recognized that I AM the biggest kid in the house. But I am one of the smartest and most responsible. I could have revved out all the gears and got it close to 100mph or more, there was room, open road with no side streets feeding into the road we were on. Ideal street racing conditions. But the point is, that if something happened, others still could be involved who did not make the choice to race and have their lives in danger. I don't want that type of responsibility. Sometimes, being a quitter is a good thing. There are many cars I could have purchased, I like this car because it should be reliable; it's fast and can be good on gas, handles great and looks good too. I never thought I would live past 18 with the things I did when I was younger. And after 18, did more stuff that should have killed me and could have killed others. Not one of us invincible. Having someone to come home to made me realize that. Once you are gone, it may be a better place, but there is no coming back! Just think about it when you are going thru the gears, every time. |

Your perceptions are interesting, if near completely incorrect in today's healthy older society. Many people are living longer, 'younger' healthier lives...much to the consternation of their children who will never see an inheritanace before THEY too are 'old'. Perhaps it is different in your society, but, as the new saying goes "50 is the new 35", chief.

I know my thinking here isn't very empathetic to the rest of the people out there on the road, but is there anyone else aside from me who doesn't race for fear of getting nailed by a cop? That's always on my mind, always has been since I was about 20, and I'm almost 28 now. I dunno, maybe I just love my $900/yr full coverage.
Although I still don't see myself driving like a nut even if I knew there are no police on the road. |
