Jepetto's Complete "Avic D3 Install"

This is a complete how-to for the Avic D3
Includes Install, Parking Brake Bypass, Amp Integration, IPod Connection and Steering Wheel Controls.

First you need to remove the entire dash:

Start under the driver’s side and remove the lower to panels:
Turn this knob 90% and unsnap this panel.

Here are the two clips that hold it in place.

The other panel also can be removed by pulling on it will a little force. Start on the left side and work your way around.

Unscrew this before you begin unsnapping the dash.

Reach in and unplug the each switch (may vary according to model and options). There is a tab on the top center of each plug that you need to press in to remove it.

Now start removing the dash piece above the steering wheel. Start on the left side and work your way around.

Before you remove the radio, you will need to remove two screws from underneath it.
To access them you need to remove this cover.

The screws are in the left and right corners.

Now remove the radio the same way as the previous. Starting on the left side and working your way around.

When you get to here, reach in and unplug all of the radio, ac, etc. connections.

Here is the new Scosche kit that I ordered from volaudio on eBay. The color for the SI is Dark Atlas Gray. It was $37 shipped and took about 5 days to get.

The Trim piece has tabs that line up perfect with the new dash piece.

Start transferring all of pieces from the old dash to the new dash. They screw in from the back.

To remove the AC buttons you will first need to remove the two knobs from the front. (I mistakenly took pictures of the volume knobs which do not need to be removed.)

Now for the wiring (Thanks to whiterice).

Find a left and right channel rca cable lying around your house and cut it in half.

Separate the negative (outside) from the positive (shielded) like this.

Solder together

I used the red rca cables for the right side channels.

Connect to the rca connections of the d3

Move the mute connection of the D3 up one row like this (this is for the parking brake bypass)

Connect the mute connection (yellow) and the parking brake connection (green) to ground

Connect the ACC (red), Battery (yellow), and Dimm (orange) together.

Connect the Antenna connection to the Antenna of the D3.

Here is what comes with the PAC steering wheel controls

You will only use three of the wires red white and black. Connect the red to ACC connect of the D3. Place a 5100 ohm resistor in-between the white and black wires. My kit did not come with a 5100 ohm resistor, so I used four 1000 ohm resistors and one 100 ohm resistor.

The White and Black wires will connect to the pink and brown wires of the Honda 20 pin connector. White to Pink/gray striped. Black to Brown/gray striped.

To Power on your Honda amp connect the blue/gray striped on the Honda 20 pin connector to the ACC connect of the D3.

Connect the VSS (pink) wire from the D3 to the blue/gray striped wire to the left of the purple wire.

Here is where I connected my ground connection.

Connect your wiring harness and antenna adaptor and test your connection with a multimeter.

If everything is connected right, plug in your D3 and make sure your speakers are working.

To install the iPod connection, first open the glove box. To drop it down further squeeze the two sides here.

Here is where it connects in the back of the D3.

Run the cable though to the glove box.

You can mount you navi antenna anywhere you get good reception. Here is where I mounted mine.

Programming the steering wheel controls. I setup like this for easy access to everything while programming

Step1
Press and hold the programming button. Turn your ignition to ON position.
The LED will light. When the LED turns off the memory is clear.

Press the programming button 3 times to set the version number. When set the LED will flash 3 times. If it does not, start over.

Step 2
Now to program the controls.
Turn the ignition to the ON position.
Press and hold the programming button until the LED lights up.
Press and hold in the following order. When the LED goes off the button has been learned and you can move on to the next one.
Vol up
Vol Down
Programming button
Track Up
Track Down
Source
Then press the programming button 3 times.

If you listen to the radio more then cds or your iPod the you can have the track up and down buttons change between your presets but you cannot have it do both.

Here is the order for that.
Vol Up
Vol Down
Then press the programming button 3 times
Source
Track up
Track down
Programming button

Now test the buttons and make sure they all work. If you screwed up just go to part 2 you do not need to program the version again.

Once everything is working unplug the d3 and mount the ears on it. I got the screws from the sides of the OEM radio.

Now screw the d3 to the dash piece with the supplies screws.

Plug everything back in and enjoy the show.

Just what I was asking for, thanks! I'm a little confused by the wiring part but I'm sure it will make a little more sense once I have the parts in hand. Between what comes with the d3 and the adapters that come with the scosche kit, are there any other adapters I need to buy? Thanks again for this, it is going to come in so useful when I purchase mine. Do you think the install will be pretty much the same for the FA5?

You will need the metra 70-1722 harness. The harness that comes with the scosche kit is for the amp bypass. Should be the same for the FA5

The install will be very much the same for an FA5, from the looks of your avatar you and I have the same car. Very good walk through!

Looks good man... I love mine- = P (I didn't hook up my vss though) I have heard mixed stories on whether it functions the same with it or without it.

Great DIY, but what would I need to do different if I used an aftermarket amp?

So does one side of the whiterice amp adapter plug into the amp and then the RCAs plug into the D3? (And im assuming you mean amp integration and not amp bypass, correct me if im wrong) Then the metra adapter hooks into the back of the D3 and then to the factory wiring?

Edit: You may want to have a mod move this to the audio DIY section...seems like it would fit better there

When you're done making the integration harness, one end will have the Pioneer harness and 4 RCA plugs on it, and then yes, the RCA's get plugged into the front and rear RCA outputs on the AVIC. The other end will simply plug into the Honda OEM radio plug.

I'm assuming you're running a 4 channel amp, and if that's the case, instead of worrying about making an integration harness, all you'd do is plug the RCA's going to your amp into the pre-outs on the AVIC and just hook up constant/accessory/ground/dimmer etc to the factory harness.

I'm just confused on all the different harnesses here. So far I know there is the metra one, the amp integration one, and thats it. The pictures in this thread are pretty good but unfortunately I cannot get the "big picture" of which harnesses are being used. Maybe a little more detail on which harness is being used would help. And is splicing into the factory harnesses that are hooked to the car required?

Very detailed, nice job! I'm sure it will help lots of people.

I'm not a fan of electrical tape, and the soldering is kinda sloppy, but that's just me being a perfectionist. Hey, if it works...

Good Job ive done 3 of these i would have used Heat Shrink tubing not electrical tape but i like to do things professionally i am an electrician by trade so i guess i am anal with electrical connections. That sucks you had to solder all those resistors together it looks like crap hopefully they don't snap on you over time.

But good DIY members have been asking for this.

PS i recommend using Rockford Fosgate twisted wire rca's please don't use that radio shack junk if you care about quality.

Not a complete match but it will work for now. I will probably end up buying the OEM piece.
