4.5-5.0 mil is industry standard. repaints are usually 7.5-8.0 mil if done very well or superthick at 10-11 mil. 4.5 mil is even on the gauge as a set standard. btw, the paint depth gauges can be bought for $1,000 each. Damage can even be at the port b/f the dealer receives the car. 1st civic i brought home i saw come off the truck. washed it myself to see the bottom scraped badly through the paint under the front spoiler. returned it to get the 2nd one which i checked the front as it rolled off the truck - no scrapes - i was happy til i noticed the whole passenger door was repainted and not clear coated at all. returned that the next day to get my 3rd civic and spent 1 hour looking it over. close enough to perfect. small spot under spoiler (thmb size) not painted and door alignment off. just not the same since most are not made in japan anymore.
