N.Y. To Get Natural-Gas-Powered 2006 Honda Civic GX

Date posted: 04-14-2006

NEW YORK — American Honda has announced it will begin selling its all-new compressed-natural-gas-powered 2006 Civic GX to New York State customers this fall. The vehicle gets 28/39 mpg, according to the EPA.

Honda said Civic GX owners are eligible for tax breaks and incentives of up to $4,000 for the car and up to $1,000 for the purchase and installation of a natural gas home refueling appliance dubbed "Phill." Phill mounts to a garage wall and allows the GX to refuel overnight from a homeowner's existing natural gas supply line.

The GX is equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 115 horsepower and 109 pound-feet of torque. Honda says CNG is about 25-percent less expensive than gasoline when purchased at a refueling station and about 50-percent cheaper than gas when supplied by a home refueling appliance.

What this means to you: If the GX is a success in New York, you can bet Honda will offer it to customers in other states.

^ That's great news for you tree huggers out there. Zero emissions, $4K tax break, and use of HOV lanes are excellent advantages that are going to be hard to refuse.
