I've read somewhere (a while ago) that excessively heavy (to a point) shift knobs can be bad for your gear box. Not sure exactly how heavy 'heavy' is. The weighted knob will make shifts feel smooth because of the added mass.
Since the weighted knob puts pressure on the underlying mechanics, the mecahnics may become subject to stress. The mechanics are engineered to very low tolerances and the extra wight may throw it out of whack in the very long run.
It is similar to resting your hand on the shifter when not shifting--a big no-no!
