The shifter cable bushings eliminate the play between the shifter cable and the shift lever on the transmission. They don't do a lot when the car is new--they would make a larger difference on an older car where the rubber has broken down somewhat.

The bars are hollow aluminum, and weigh probably just less than a pound each. When the ACE body structure forces the front end and the engine down in a collision, I guarantee that these bars are going with it. Steel > aluminum.
I don't mean to get technical on you, but bracing the car means that more crash energy is transferred to me instead of the car. The ACE body structure is meant to destroy the car and absorb as much of the crash energy as possible so that it doesn't go to the occupants. By bracing the car, I'm transferring some of that absorption away from the car and to myself (which also means that the bars would cause the car to sustain slightly LESS damage). Why do you think that racing cars from the 50s caused so many deaths when they crashed? Because the cars were built as strong as possible, which meant that all the crash energy was transferred to the driver instead of the car.
However, in the end, I'm not terribly concerned since the bars would buckle easily in a crash and the car's other safety systems are still in place.
