First off, it's a blast!
You'll tear up street tires pretty quickly in autocross - generally the edges go long before you wear out the center tread. Try it out, get hooked and then buy a dedicated set of autocross tires - decent tires aren't too expensive and that will save your street tires for everyday use.
As for brakes, I never noticed any increased wear in them but I guess it's possible depending on the types of courses you run.
If you look
here, you can find the SCCA division closest to you. If you ask around at performance shops, etc., you may find some local clubs as well. For instance the club I'm in isn't an SCCA affiliated club, but we follow SCCA rules.
