The first part of what your friend told you is just plain dumb
This is why NST pulleys rock! There are pulley kits out there that underdrive (slow down) your electrical system to a point where your lights can dim or your battery can suffer. This will NOT happen with the NST kit because they provide an overdrive (speed up) alternator pulley with their kit. You have nothing to worry about.
