you just measure the resistance across two pins, if the resistance changes when you press a button, you have your wire. Most of these controll systems work on a simple system where they are supplied with 12v. The controll actually has only 2 wires total. When no switches are being pressed, the current runs through a large resistor that cuts the voltage down to something like 2 volts. when you press any of the momentary switches (volume up/down, channel up/down, mode) they each have a resistor in them with a lower value than the one the current normally runs through. so when you press volume up, the current follows the path of least resistance and the voltage increases to, lets say, 4v for as long as you hold the switch. The HU simply has a voltmeter built in. Any time the voltage changes to 4 volts, it knows to increase the volume one step.
I have not personally tested the Civic's system yet, however this is how the cruise and other controlls worked on my gm cars and my toyota. Good luck to you, it is really simple to test this, shouldn't take more than a minute or two.
If this turns out to be how the controlls work, those of you out there without steering wheel controlls could actually add them rather easily with your own little circuit board and a bit of wiring fun
