After taking a good look at how much room there is between the rear seats and the rear glass on my 06 sedan, I've got this idea in my head that it would be awesome to make it a pseudo-wagon/hatch by removing the rear deck entirely. I'm not worried about having to relocate the speakers. I'm more concerned about crash safety as the deck is metal and for all I know is integral to the structural rigidity of the whole vehicle or at least to holding the rear seats in place. Any thoughts? If I knew it were safe, I'd get started today!

It would be so the dog could have an air-conditioned, somewhat well-lit space to ride when all the seats are taken. She's too big to ride on a lap but small enough to enjoy herself back there if there were a "back there."

I saw the instructions for removing the deck cover (to access the speakers, etc), but after doing that is it possible to remove the deck itself?
Not a good idea IMO...not safe
