Bringing up a dead thread here, but there is an explanation to the theory of negative last, and connected to the engine somwhere.
The last connection made is the one that sparks. You want the spark as far away as possible from the battery because as some people don't know the gasses released inside a battery during normal use are explosive (hydrogen). So connecting the negative last and to a ground that's farther away from the battery greatly reduces the chance of the battery exploding in your face and blinding you, including using a charger. If charging your battery always plug the charger in last!
