I believe I fall in the subset you've identified in lower half of your paragraph. I have a good deal of parts that scream "look at me" but I can assure you that I do not have an ego problem or care religiously about how others think of me. I wanted my car to look unique and it's become a hobby - that's all.

I wouldn't call myself a real tuner, but I wouldn't call myself a faker. I'd say I'm reasonably knowledgeable in regards to cars but will admit that most of it's theoretical rather than hands on. I'd love to work on my car as much as possible (I've ripped apart my interior, changed my trunk, changed my doors, installed an intake, as well as other random things) - but I wouldn't trust myself to make any modifications that could put my safety in jeopardy.
