Help removing "Type R" shift knob

My car had an aftermarket shift knob when I bought it and I want to switch back to the original, because my car is not a type R and i think putting type R crap on something that isn't a type R is pretty ricey. The knob is like this one (big one on the bottom right):

The base of the knob has the little metal band like the one you can see on the knob to the left. I know to remove the original knob there's a nut you loosen before you can take the knob off, but I cant find any nut (think the band is covering it up). Any ideas how to get it off? I've tried just twisting firmly but don't want do go too hard and break something, and I don't wanna tear up the edge of the boot either. Thanks for any help you can give.
