Actually, wider tires don't increase the size of the contact patch, they change the shape of the contact patch and the shape of the patch changes less in dynamic situations. Thats where the increased grip comes from. Size of the contact patch is mostly determined by vehicle weight and distribution of that weight. Strange I know, but thats what actually happens.
