I have that setup. Only use it if you are picky about the ride quality. I soften if up when I have a non-enthusiast in the car (such as my g/f). and the ride is pretty comfortable. The EDFC motors sit on top of the strut, so there's no way they'd break by hitting anything. Not sure what gave you the idea that they'd break, but they won't break from something like that. If you really want it, I'd keep an eye out for a used one or something b/c $400 is real steep for the new ones.
