Not even sure if its called a heat shield or not, but i think its to dampen a fire just in case it happens in the engine bay. But what i'm trying to get at is, is it to dampen and put out a fire in the engine bay, or does it reduce heat. I want to take it off but will the drastic change in temperature on the hood do anything to the clear coat or paint? Sorry for the poorly worded paragraph... lol

yes its to dampen a fire. why would you want to remove it for? i doubt it will have much effect on the paint.
