Just make sure before you do this that it is your clutch and not a bad synchro causing your grinding. I joined up to read this DIY so I could change mine. With 120K of abuse I figured it was time and with the classic clutch symptoms (shudder on downshift, grind getting into 1st or reverse, felt like slippage at low rpms, etc.). I ran out of time (four kids, hockey, and work) so I had Honda do it for me. Clutch had 30-40% left but 1-2 synchro was toast. Had them replace the infamous 3rd at the same time. I have the old parts and you can see the wear.
I was convinced from my internet diagnosis that the clutch was bad - a lot of the Honda forums have this clutch symptoms problems/cause chart. Should be posted here too. I would have felt even dumber than I am if I spent the time replacing parts without getting to the root problem. Is there a DIY transmission rebuild/bad synchro diagnostic tree?
