I don't know, I heard the Injen CAI doesn't require it, but some say it does.
It's not that scary at all, at least for the AEM. Sure, there is a alot of taking out (stock airbox) but not a whole lot of putting back in.
As for cutting the wheel well liner, I was a bit intimidated by that but the material is soft plastic and an Exacto knife cuts through it like butter. Just make sure to bolt/snap-screw everything back on cause I forgot the two screws on the front for the little flaps that hang down in front of the front wheel... and yeah.. it got tore up on the highway and eventually I just cut that part off. Nothing noticable, but yeah, FYI.
