It doesn't stress anything. If you couldn't do it, they wouldn't have given you the option.

It's a good idea to downshift when approaching a red light, traversing downgrades. There are benefits to doing it. I've done it for almsot three years now, and there is no problem with my tranny. (also use the ebrake when parking)
