Does the oath say anything about protecting the country regardless of what was threatening it? If it does, what would you do if you felt that our involvement in Iraq was actually hurting America? Maybe he doesn't see it as betraying his country and his comrades, maybe he feels that by refusing to fight - he
is obeying his oath.
I'm just throwing that out there.
