I believe OEM systems use something to that effect, except I think they use a solid-state gyro to sense "yaw rate", but they also monitor the steering position as well. Not sure why the two similar signal types.....
But to answer your question, I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work, except in a case where you'd get the lateral acceleration without a lot of "turning" i.e. changing lanes, but that could be fixed through programming.
