Haha, I think everyone asks the "why" question, but I think you anwsered it yourself: "I mean it looks cool, nicer and everything"
Theoretically, you could do it without the key, but you'd have to somehow disable the ECU from doing the code verification in the key and redo the wiring to bypass the ignition cylinder. In any case, if you did that, anybody could get in your car and start the engine, sans key
